Keep Fin Alive

Keep Fin Alive FIN is a soft shark on a mission to spread awareness of threats to the oceans & marine life. Sharks and the oceans desperately need our help.

The ultimate goal of the campaign is to take a light-hearted approach in helping to change the common misconception of sharks and drive more attention to the problems of shark overfishing, finning, shark fishing tournaments, bycatch and longlining. We're using the power of social media to capture even those who usually turn a blind eye to the negative stories. We have lots of supportin

g us, including celebs, scientists, photographers & conservationists. The most recent and accurate report states that up to 273 million sharks are killed each year. Sharks just cannot reproduce quickly enough to keep up with the demand and the only way to stop shark extinction is to stop the trades. Sharks play a vital role in keeping the oceans healthy and are essential to an ecosystem that produces more oxygen than all the rainforests combined, provides a third of the world with food, removes half of the atmosphere’s greenhouse gases, and controls our planet’s temperature and weather. Protecting South Africa’s Threatened Sharks and Rays - It’s Time for Policy Change

At Earth Legacy Foundation, we are committed to evidence-based conservation, and that means standing up when policies fall short of protecting our marine biodiversity.

Shockingly, several species - listed as Endangered or even Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List - are still permitted for commercial and recreational fishing in South Africa. This includes iconic and ecologically important species like:

❗ Carcharias ta**us (Ragged-tooth shark) – Critically Endangered
❗ Galeorhinus galeus (Soupfin shark) – Critically Endangered
❗ Rostroraja alba (Bottlenose skate) – Endangered
❗ Mustelus mustelus (Smooth-hound shark) – Endangered

We’ve launched a petition to call on the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to align national regulations with global conservation priorities by removing all IUCN endangered species from the Permitted Catch List.

📢 Add your voice to this urgent call for action:

Together, we can turn policy into progress and help safeguard the future of South Africa’s precious marine life.
