The Countdown to Christmas less than a week away.

Have you decided what to get your dog? How about a stocking full of tasty treats?
Here is a recipe for a delicious homemade treat that your dog will love.

HEALTHY HOMEMADE BANANA PUMPKIN DOG TREATS
3 cups whole wheat flour + extra for dusting counter
2 eggs
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 banana, mashed

INSTRUCTIONS
1) Preheat oven to 350°F.
2) Mix eggs, banana and pumpkin together. Add flour and mix until all the flour is incorporated.
3) Lightly dust the counter and a rolling pin with flour, then roll out dough to approximately 1/8" and cut out treats.
4) Lay on a baking sheet and bake for approximately 20 minutes. Cool completely before giving to your pup!

We so proud of one of our junior handlers who is fostering one of our guide dogs, entered his first CGC Puppy with Buddy and passed. WELL DONE, as they say "In the back of the net". Thank you to everyone involved.

KZN Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club held a puppy CGC on a rainy 24 September 2025.
We had great fun in the rain with our Dog Guides and their fosters/trainers who both qualified .
Well done to Jason with Caleb/ Robin and Simon with Dobby.
Thank you to Charmayne Ann van Rijsbergen and our judge Eleanor Gow for a well run wet morning.

National Service Dog Month

September is National Service Dog Month! Service dogs are dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.

This month is dedicated to raising awareness and educating the community about service dogs that provide greater independence and support to their partners.

For years, Smart Service Dogs has been providing service dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities, transforming the "lives of families one dog at a time".

Robin, Dobby and Buddy, are the next generation of service dogs who are preparing to make a life-changing difference.

Service dogs are professionally trained and partnered with adults and children with disabilities to assist with daily tasks and increase independence. They help with a variety of tasks that make a significant impact on the lives of their partners.

Tasks could include pulling wheelchairs, picking up dropped items, alerting people who are hard of hearing, mitigating symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and more.

At Smart Service Dogs , every service dog spends their first 14 to 16 months with a volunteer puppy raiser to learn basic tasks and socialize in public and private settings and 45 tasks before graduating.
