Hack and Hike

Hack and Hike Hack and Hike is a group of volunteers who treasure the natural beauty of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve.

We aim to help the area's conservation by eradicating alien invasive tree species (pines, wattles and gums).

Restoring habitats means we help to secure the homes of all of these creatures, from tiny to large! 🦋🐍🐆🐸🪲🐛

Over the Freedom Day long weekend, Hack and Hike Blyde teamed up with volunteers from .and.shoots.sa to clear alien invasive wattle seedlings, saplings and trees growing along the Belvedere Creek in the Blyde River Canyond Nature Reserve. It was a beautiful weekend!☀️

We cleared over 5200 wattles along a 3km stretch of the river, helping to protect water resources and biodiversity in this critical ecosystem 🪲🦎🌾🌿

In Southern Africa, wattle trees grow thickly along rivers consuming far more water than indigenous grassland flora which dries up precious water resources. They also shade out many diverse species that need sun to thrive and can make fires more destructive by increasing the fuel load in habitats.

Keen to explore and help restore this remarkable canyon? Message us to come on a future outing!

The veld is alive with new growth after a prescribed burn by reserve management in the Blyde River Canyon. Regular burns are essential for healthy grassland ecosystems and over millions of years, many species have evolved with fire.

1. 🔥 helps stimulate germination for many species of indigenous wildflowers.
2. 🔥 kills off many alien invasive species
3. 🔥 burns off earlier season of dead growth and makes way for growth.
4. 🔥 helps to store carbon in grasslands.

Cape tulips, locusts, tree cutting, butterflies and orchids from yesterday’s outing. We cut down 218 pines in total🌲🚫!
