WOMEN IN MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA – WOMEN’S MONTH AWARENESS & EMPOWERMENT EDITION
πŸ“… AUGUST 2026 | WOMEN’S MONTH

🌸 CELEBRATING WOMEN’S MONTH 2026

August is Women’s Month in South Africa, a national period dedicated to recognising the contribution, resilience, and leadership of women across all sectors of society.

In alignment with this national commemoration, the mining sector is highlighting the growing role of women in transforming one of South Africa’s most strategic industries.

🌍 OVERVIEW: WOMEN IN MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA

The South African mining sector continues to experience meaningful transformation in gender inclusion and empowerment. Women now represent approximately 19% of the mining workforce, a significant rise from about 3% in 2002.

This growth reflects ongoing reforms, skills development, and industry-wide transformation initiatives aligned with national empowerment goals.

The sector is actively modernising, with industry stakeholders targeting:

30%–40% female representation in the overall workforce

Up to 50% women in management roles

More than 53,000 women are now employed across various mining disciplines in South Africa, marking a strong shift toward inclusivity and economic participation.

πŸ“Š KEY INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

βœ” Workforce Growth
Women’s participation increased from 3% (2002) β†’ ~19% (current)

βœ” Leadership Targets

30%–40% women in workforce

50% women in leadership positions

βœ” Industry Shift

Increased mechanisation and automation reducing physical barriers

πŸŽ‰ CONGRATULATIONS TO CURRO KRUGERSDORP AND THE ORGANISERS OF THE INAUGURAL WEST RAND ROBOTICS LEAGUE! πŸ€–πŸ†

The Mogale City Business Committee NPC (MCBC NPC) extends its sincere congratulations to Curro Krugersdorp, the organising committee, educators, learners, participating schools and all stakeholders involved in the successful hosting of the first-ever West Rand Robotics League.

This landmark event represents a significant investment in the future of our region by promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education among young learners. Through coding, robotics, innovation, problem-solving and teamwork, participants demonstrated the skills and creativity that will drive South Africa's future digital economy.

We commend Executive Head Annemarie Lombard, the dedicated staff of Curro Krugersdorp, and all participating schools for creating a platform that encourages excellence, innovation and collaboration among our youth.

Special congratulations to the learners who excelled in both the Novice and Apprentice Streams, and to every participant who embraced the challenge with determination, resilience and enthusiasm.

Initiatives such as the West Rand Robotics League contribute meaningfully towards developing future engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and technology leaders. We are confident that this competition will continue to grow and inspire generations of young innovators across Mogale City and the wider West Rand region.

Well done on this remarkable achievement. We look forward to seeing the West Rand Robotics League become a flagship educational and innovation event in our region.
