AUGUST 2026 | WOMENβS MONTH
πΈ CELEBRATING WOMENβS MONTH 2026
August is Womenβs Month in South Africa, a national period dedicated to recognising the contribution, resilience, and leadership of women across all sectors of society.
In alignment with this national commemoration, the mining sector is highlighting the growing role of women in transforming one of South Africaβs most strategic industries.
π OVERVIEW: WOMEN IN MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA
The South African mining sector continues to experience meaningful transformation in gender inclusion and empowerment. Women now represent approximately 19% of the mining workforce, a significant rise from about 3% in 2002.
This growth reflects ongoing reforms, skills development, and industry-wide transformation initiatives aligned with national empowerment goals.
The sector is actively modernising, with industry stakeholders targeting:
30%β40% female representation in the overall workforce
Up to 50% women in management roles
More than 53,000 women are now employed across various mining disciplines in South Africa, marking a strong shift toward inclusivity and economic participation.
