MPDAC member, Mareldia Chowglay, reflects on the life of struggle stalwart, Theresa Solomon.

Today, my heart is heavy with grief as I mourn the loss of an incredible woman—Theresa Solomon, affectionately known as Com T. She was more than a friend, mentor and mother figure; she was a guiding light in my life and in the lives of so many others. I have known her since I was just a girl of 13, and throughout the years, she became a constant source of love, wisdom and strength.

Com T’s life was truly a testament to living with purpose and kindness. She poured her heart into everything she did, nurturing countless young lives with her mentorship, stories and unwavering love.

Her impact extended far beyond her immediate circle—she shaped generations, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and hope. Her presence was a gift, and her absence leaves a void that words cannot fully express.

Today, I find myself overwhelmed with grief, yet I am at peace knowing she is at peace. She lived a full life, one rich with love, laughter, and meaningful connections. It was an honour to walk this path with her—to learn from her, to be inspired by her, and to share in her journey. Her legacy will forever remain in our hearts, guiding us as we carry on her love and teachings.

Rest in peace, Com T. Thank you for everything—for your guidance, your kindness, and the beautiful person you were. You will be forever missed, but your spirit will continue to inspire us all.

With love and heartfelt condolences, to her daughter Lee-anne, Marcus, grandchildren Ruiz and Tina.

MPDAC mourns the passing of Theresa Solomon (79), a mother, grandmother, community leader, former Cape Town Mayor, a diplomat and founder member of MPDAC.

Fondly known as Com T or T, born in 1945, Theresa dedicated her life to the struggle for justice and equality.

The Solomon family moved to Woodlands in 1979 where she was involved in numerous campaigns such as the bus boycott, advocating for a school in Tafelsig and opposing rent increases.

She was instrumental in community activitism with the establishment of the Leadwood Creche and the Woodlands People's Centre.

Theresa went on to become Cape Town's first black female Mayor and later served as South Africa's Ambassador to Canada as well as a term as Ambassador to Tanzania.

She passed away on 7 July 2025, surrounded by her family.

MPDAC conveys our deepest sympathy to her family, friends and comrades. Your loss is our loss.

Rest well, daughter of the soil, we salute your tireless dedication and commitment to building a better community and country.
