Western Cape Association of and for Persons with Disabilities We are a committed group of people who strive towards the independence of persons with disabilities. Join us now and begin changing lives!

We work with persons with disabilities to achieve their potential, dreams and goals. This may include (but is not limited to) sourcing mobility devices, dealing with social issues within the home, arranging for home care, caring for children with severe disabilities or lobbying for accessibility in the community.

We often speak about access to schools for children with disabilities, but access to the full education system is just as important.

The White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities stipulates that persons with disabilities must have access to primary, secondary and tertiary education and any other training for their entire lives.

In other words, the same way individuals without disabilities are free to do so.

This Youth Day, let’s shift the question. Instead of asking, β€œWhat barriers do young people with disabilities face?”

What if we asked: What are we missing by not listening closely enough?
Across the Western Cape, young people with disabilities are:
β€’ Reimagining education.
β€’ Building businesses.
β€’ Creating culture in ways that challenge the ordinary.
β€’ Leading conversations that move us all forward.

They’re not waiting for a seat at the table. They’re redesigning the table itself. Youth Day is about courage.

Today, courage looks like building systems that don’t ask young people to squeeze in but shift, adapt, and grow because of them.

Let’s move from inclusion as an afterthought to inclusion as a starting point.

Access to education does not end after primary school, but extends to high school and tertiary education.

The White Paper on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is clear when it states that "persons with disabilities must have access to inclusive learning opportunities throughout their lives where they can learn with peers without disabilities in barrier-free environments."

We cannot expect our youth to contribute to society when we don't give them the tools to do so.

One year into Vari’s role at WCAPD, her reflections point to something important: meaningful impact doesn’t happen overnight; it’s shaped through learning, listening, and continuous refinement.

Over the past year, deeper engagement with our programmes has strengthened our understanding of what works, what needs to evolve, and how we respond to the real needs of persons with disabilities and their families.

From economic participation to climate resilience, the focus is on building programmes that last. Because inclusion that isn’t intentional and responsive simply doesn’t hold.
