Rietvlei reopened on 15 June 2026 after a partial closure due to elevated E. coli levels linked to sewage pollution.

Raising E. coli concentrations in a large water body such as Rietvlei, which exceeds 6 metres in depth in places, would appear to require a substantial sewage input.

Yet no clear explanation has been provided regarding the source and scale of the contamination, nor why it took almost two months to resolve. Not good enough City of Cape Town

🇿🇦 Happy Youth Day, South Africa 🇿🇦

Today we celebrate the courage, passion and potential of young people.

At 24 years old, I am still considered part of South Africa's youth, and it makes me reflect on how much can happen when young people are given the opportunity to lead, dream and take action.

When I was just 16 years old, I founded Save a Fishie with a simple belief: that one person can make a difference. I never imagined that a small idea would grow into hundreds of clean-ups, environmental education programmes, partnerships, and opportunities to work alongside schools, communities, businesses and incredible volunteers across the country.

A huge part of my journey has been shaped by GIRL GUIDES. Through Guiding, I learned leadership, service, resilience, teamwork and the importance of leaving the world better than I found it. Those lessons continue to guide everything I do today.

Youth are often told that they are the leaders of tomorrow. But I believe young people are leaders today.

Across South Africa, young people are solving problems, protecting the environment, supporting their communities, standing up for what they believe in and creating positive change every single day.

To every young person reading this: your age does not determine your ability to make a difference. Your ideas matter. Your voice matters. Your actions matter.

This Youth Day, may we remember the young people who came before us and fought for a better future, and may we honour their legacy by continuing to build a South Africa that is kinder, cleaner, stronger and filled with opportunity for all.

Never underestimate the impact one young person can have.

Happy Youth Day! 💙🌍🐟

MEDIA RELEASE

City begins major sewer rehabilitation project in Milnerton

The City's Water and Sanitation Directorate will invest more than R12 million in the rehabilitation of 5,3km of sewer pipes in Milnerton. Construction is scheduled to start on 27 June 2026 and continue until March 2027. Read more below:

The project forms part of the City’s ongoing investment in critical sanitation infrastructure and aims to improve the reliability of the sewer network while reducing the risk of future pipe failures.

Through a City-appointed contractor, JK Construction, about 5,3 km of ageing sewer pipelines, ranging from 150mm to 300mm in diameter, will be rehabilitated across several roads in Milnerton, including Oleander, Nerina, Mimosa, Lobelia, Keurboom, Graaff, Langerman Avenue, Ixia, Heather, Gousblom, Freesia, Erica Way, Ascot, Disa, Crasula, Gardenia Crescent and Bergonia Close.

The work will involve a combination of trenchless pipe replacement techniques and open-trench excavations, depending on site conditions.

Residents may experience temporary traffic disruptions, including stop-and-go traffic control, lane restrictions and short-term road closures. Every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience and maintain access to properties where possible. Residents and motorists are encouraged to exercise caution near construction areas and to adhere to all temporary traffic signage and safety instructions.

Should residents require any additional information on this project, they can contact:

'Under our current Integrated Development Plan, Cape Town is rolling out the most ambitious infrastructure investment programme in South Africa. This R12 million sewer rehabilitation in Milnerton is exactly what that looks like on the ground. We are systematically replacing vulnerable networks to prevent failures before they happen, safeguarding our communities and our environment. Thank you to the Milnerton residents for your patience as we execute this essential upgrade,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

Why did Penguin Fred wash up at Lagoon Beach in Cape Town?

Was he hungry because there were too few fish to eat after years of pollution impacting an estuary where fish breed and grow? Was he sick from swimming in polluted water? Did he mistake a piece of plastic for food and swallow it?

It could have been any of these. It could have been all of them. Or it could have been something else entirely. We will probably never know.

What we do know is that every time sewage spills into our rivers, wetlands and ocean, and every time plastic pollution enters the environment, it makes life a little harder for creatures already struggling to survive.

The African penguin is now critically endangered. Every bird matters.

Penguin George is a reminder that what we flush down our toilets doesn't just disappear. Wet wipes, sanitary pads and nappies block sewers, causing overflows that pollute the waters that fish, seabirds and countless other animals depend on.

The choices we make in our homes can have consequences all the way downriver and out to sea.

If we want a future where African penguins still waddle along our shores, we need to stop avoidable sewage pollution today.

Only flush the 3 P's: P*e, Poo and Paper.
🐧💙 Because every penguin counts.
