Introducing our young soloists for our 2026 youth concert.

Ulrich Snyman (20) is student at the University of Johannesburg, where he is studying Economics and Econometrics with the goal of becoming a Chartered Financial Analyst. He attended Hoërskool Linden, where he played an active role in the school’s choir and vocal ensembles under the guidance of Dr Gert Potgieter. During his school career, he served as Headboy of the Choir and voice group leader for the basses and tenors, demonstrating both leadership and musical excellence. His talent and commitment to music were further recognised when he achieved an outstanding 89% on his Grade 6 Trinity examination. Outside of his academic and musical pursuits, Ulrich enjoys listening to music and continues to nurture his passion for the arts alongside his studies in finance and economics.

Introducing our young soloists for our 2026 youth concert.

Philip Anspach is a grade 11 student at Pretoria Boys High School. He plays in their symphony orchestra, Dixie band, trombone quartet, brass ensemble, wind quintet, and annual production band for this year’s musical “Joseph and his Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

He plans to study engineering after taking a gap year, in which he will spend time travelling, rock climbing, and playing in orchestras.

This will be his fourth appearance as a soloist with an orchestra, following two previous performances with the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra and one at the Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool Pretoria Concerto Festival. Furthermore, he earned a distinction for his ABRSM grade 8 practical exam in 2025 and has been the first French Horn of the Simfonia Juventi Youth Orchestra for two years.

Introducing our young soloists for our 2026 youth concert.

Henning Bouwer (13) is a grade 7 pupil at Jan Celliers Primary. He is a keen musician playing, apart from the flute, piano and violin. He started playing flute in 2021 at the age of 8 with Sanri Naude. He has participated in a number of national music competitions, such as the Victoria Bennett competition where he was the winner of the 11 - 12 age category in 2024 and the Hubert van der Spuy competition where he was 3rd overall in 2025, a finalist consisting of 8 participants in 2024 and the woodwind category winner for each year of his participation (2023, 2024 and 2025). In January this year, Henning won the grand prize in his age group (10 - 13 years) in the International Youth Music Competition (Classical category) and again in March (Classical Hobbyist category) receiving 100% for both performances resulting in an invitation to perform at the Prize Winners Recitals at the Royal Academy of Music in London and The DiMenna Centre for Classical Music in New York. Apart from music, Henning loves swimming, running and spending time with his friends on the golf course.

Introducing our young soloists for our 2026 youth concert.

Bianke van Staden’s musical journey began at the tender age of 5 under the tutelage of Lee Marais Nel. She has since established herself as a dedicated young musician with a deep passion for the violin, a strong foundation in classical violin, complemented by diverse performance experiences, competition achievements, and masterclass training.

In 2024, Bianke was awarded Runner-Up in the UCT Strings Competition (High School category). She performed as soloist with both the Pretoria and Johannesburg Symphony Orchestras, is a member of the FAK Orchestra, the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, her school orchestra, was a member of the church band as well as the Gaborone Community orchestra. Bianke has benefited from masterclasses with various international Suzuki instructors, including Christophe Bossuat and Koen Rens.

She is currently a Grade 10 learner at Helpmekaar Kollege, where she combines her love for the arts with academic interest in neuroscience. Bianke has a particular interest in anything to do with the brain and studies on the impact of music in patients with brain injuries. In her free time, the enjoys playing the piano, reading, writing poetry and spending time with her pets.

Introducing our young soloists for our 2026 youth concert.

Emily Mitas started violin lessons when she was 6 years old with Mrs Leonie Greyling. She has been a member of the UP4strings ensemble since 2019, has served as concert master of the intermediate group under the tutelage of Ms Hendi Krog and is currently part of the Chamber string ensemble under the mentorship of Ms Denise Sutton. Highlights in Emily's career include a solo performance with the Pretoria Bach Choir and forming part of a professional orchestra accompanying and showcasing Beethoven's Choral Fantasia, Mass in C and Piano Concerto No. 1. She has performed as soloist in the PSO youth concerto festival
(2022 & 2026) and the JSO Senior concerto festival in 2024 and has served as violinist in the Community Philharmonic orchestra (Tshwane) and FAK youth orchestra for various projects. Emily has been a member of Simfonia Juventi since 2023. Her perseverance, dedication and determination has earned her the honor to lead the orchestra in 2026 as concert master. She was also selected as one of the soloists to perform with the orchestra this year (Saint-Saens Violin Concerto No. 3). Emily has a deep connection with praising and worshipping God using her gift and love for the violin and forms part of her school and church worship teams through which an aspiration for improvisation has evolved. She has on occasion performed alongside her family,l at concerts as part of the Spring Organ Concert Series at Universiteitsoord (2024) and the UP Lunch hour concert series during 2025. Emily is a Gr12 pupil at Hatfield Christian School, she enjoys playing hockey and serves as a vocal leader on the committee of her HS choir. It is Emily’s aspiration to be a solo violinist across the world or a Paediatrician one day with an ultimate goal of combining her love for music with helping those in need.

Introducing our young soloists for our 2026 youth concert.

Meldt van der Spuy (14), a Grade 9 student at Midstream College, made his solo debut with the FAK Youth Orchestra and the Pretoria Symphony Orchestra in April this year. He has studied violin with Carin Jansen van Vuuren since the age of six and, although he also plays piano and flute, considers the violin his greatest passion. Since age 12, he has performed as first violinist in the Simfonia Juventi Youth Orchestra under Eddie Clayton, and is also a member of the FAK Youth Orchestra conducted by Jaco van Staden. Outside of music, Meldt enjoys debating, hockey, and athletics.

Introducing our young soloists for our 2026 youth concert.

Xander Yushu Singh (16) is a grade 11 student at St Benedict's College Bedfordview. He started learning the piano at 5 years old and has been studying piano under Dr Olga Tsikhelashvilli for 11 years. He aspires to have a career either in the realm of medicine or in theoretical physics. Some of his notable accolades in music include being a semi-finalist for the Victoria K Bennett Competition in 2025, achieving Best Under 16 Concerto Performance and best performance of an impressionist work in the Johannesburg Festival for the advancement of music.
