📋 SANS 241 has changed. What does the revised standard mean for water quality monitoring?

“The revised standard is ultimately designed to support more targeted and cost-effective monitoring. Instead of routinely testing every possible parameter, the risk-based approach focuses resources on the parameters that pose a credible risk to a specific supply system.” - Mariette Swart, Water Quality Specialist at Rand Water and member of the SABS/TC147 Water national committee

The move towards risk-based monitoring could have significant implications for municipalities, water service providers and other entities responsible for drinking-water quality.

Rather than applying a blanket approach to testing, the revised standard places greater emphasis on understanding the risks specific to each supply system.

For systems with strong historical data, robust monitoring programmes and good operational control, this could ultimately reduce unnecessary or repetitive testing and potentially lower monitoring costs.

However, systems with limited data or gaps in their monitoring programmes may initially need to invest more in sampling, risk assessments and data collection to establish a stronger evidence base.

The key takeaway? Good water-quality data and a strong understanding of your system are becoming increasingly important.

🥜 Turning agricultural waste into a water treatment solution.

“When the company was established in 2016, South Africa relied almost entirely on imported activated carbon, exposing municipalities and industry to fluctuating exchange rates, shipping delays and supply chain disruptions. Today, Rotocarb supplies more than 300 customers with locally manufactured activated carbon, providing greater supply security while supporting local beneficiation.” - Richard Oldnall, Business Development Manager, Rotocarb (Pty) Ltd

This is more than a story about activated carbon. It is a story about local manufacturing, circular economy principles and water security.

Rotocarb is transforming macadamia nut shells - an agricultural by-product - into activated carbon used to purify drinking water and industrial process water. The approach reduces waste while creating a locally manufactured alternative to imported treatment media.

For South Africa's water sector, local production also has an important resilience benefit. By reducing dependence on international supply chains, local manufacturing can help limit exposure to shipping delays, exchange-rate fluctuations and other disruptions. Rotocarb now supplies more than 300 customers.

It raises an interesting question: how many other waste streams could become valuable resources for South Africa's infrastructure sectors?
