IFNA/JICA organized 2-day workshop in Chad (13-14 November)🎉

IFNA Secretariat and JICA supported a 2-day workshop in N'Djamena from 13 to 14 November 2024 on IFNA approaches (Multisectoral approach and Nutrient Focused Approach/NFA) and the Japanese Seikatsu Kaizen approach to improve daily life conditions of rural population.

25 participants from the government and relevant partners based in N’Djamena attended the workshop physically. IFNA focal point represented by Pr Bechir led the 2 days workshop and the IFNA team supported and facilitated sessions online.

In Day 1, Mr. Nakada, JICA technical advisor presented the concept of NFA and showed the excel tool to demonstrate the concept. The participants were interested in the tool and the NFA application.

In Day 2, participants learned the Seikatsu Kaizen Approach through an online presentation facilitated by Dr. Priscilla, regional consultant of IFNA and a video presentation, with technical guidance by Pr. Ota, JICA technical advisor, and Ms. Seki, researcher at NPO (International Farmers Participation Technical Network: IFPaT).
After the presentations, the participants divided into 3 groups worked on the tools such as the Happiness tree, Community analysis and Seasonal calendar to be familiarized with them and to provide recommendations on the possible implementation on the ground.

At the end of the workshop, participants produced an example of Action plan for nutrition improvement in Chad and shared it with IFNA team.
Although JICA and IFNA members couldn’t travel to Chad, Pr. Bechir assisted by Mr. Hassan, local consultant, ensured the organization and smooth processing of the workshop with their strong leadership, enabling participants to gain a solid understanding of the approaches well.
IFNA will continue to keep this relationship and follow up the action plan in the future.

🍅NFA App field test in Kasama, Zambia, 31 Oct-1 Nov 2024🇿🇲

IFNA Secretariat together with JICA and AUDA-NEPAD has developed a Nutrient Focused Approach (NFA) Application and tested it on the ground for the feasibility of the App.

IFNA mission team visited Senga Hill district in Kasama province in the northern part of Zambia.
The mission team introduced the NFA App and its purpose to the district nutrition officers and farmers to identify the nutrient gaps in the diets of families and to improve their nutrition through advising the local nutritious food crops to be consumed to fill in the households' requirements.

For preparing the user test, the mission team visited a local market in Senga Hill to know the local food items, took food pictures and measured the portion size.
The mission members also trained the district nutrition officers on the use of the App and on the surveys to collect data to input in the App. The nutrition officers conducted the dietary survey with some local households using 24-hour recall to understand their dietary habits.
The mission team also visited the farm which was supported by a JICA’s technical cooperation project.
Some challenges were found through the field test and IFNA team will continue to work on the App to be ready for the launch next year.
