Happy World Entrepreneurs’ Day! 🍞✨

Today at Tshepang Care Centre, 10 incredible community members graduated from our Bakery Skills Development program!

Not only did they bake fresh loaves of bread today, but they also shared how this journey transformed their lives, turning everyday passion into income-generating skills, and opening eyes to the power of starting a local business.

At United Way South Africa, equipping people with real skills for financial stability is at the heart of what we do. Huge congratulations to our new bakers and future business owners! 🎓🎉

Empowering Through Skills 🌱🥟💪

We believe that true empowerment is about giving people the skills and confidence to create opportunities for themselves.

We recently trained both young people and older community members in baking, equipping them with practical skills they can use to provide for their families and, importantly, to start their own income-generating businesses.

This is more than baking, it is about building livelihoods, reducing poverty, promoting self-reliance, and creating sustainable opportunities within our communities. ❤️

As the saying goes, “Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach them to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.”

By investing in skills, we are helping people move from simply receiving support to creating their own opportunities and becoming economically empowered.

Today marks International Youth Day 2026, celebrated under the global theme:

“Different Contexts, Common Aspirations.” 🌍✨

Across South Africa, young people face vastly different socio-economic realities and structural barriers. Yet, regardless of where they start, their aspirations remain fundamentally the same: to access quality education, gain meaningful industry exposure, build sustainable careers, and uplift their communities.

At United Way South Africa, we see this determination every day through our youth employability and student development initiatives at Central Johannesburg TVET College – Alexandra Campus and False Bay College – Khayelitsha Campus.

Through these initiatives, we support NATED Engineering learners, automotive engineering students and other TVET students by providing:

🔹 Practical career development and work-readiness sessions
🔹 Direct industry exposure to bridge classroom learning with workplace requirements
🔹 Opportunities to develop future-ready technical and employability skills
🔹 Equitable access to support for both NSFAS-funded and unfunded students
🔹 Guidance that helps young people navigate pathways from education into meaningful employment

From Alexandra to Khayelitsha, the contexts may be different, but the aspirations are common.

When we equip young people with future-ready skills, critical support and real-world exposure, we help connect their local realities with their global ambitions.

What an incredible day! 💚

As we closed Nelson Mandela Month on the 31st of July and commemorated the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, observed on 30 July, United Way South Africa, in partnership with Bridgestone South Africa and Otraco Southern Africa, spent a meaningful day at the New Life Centre for Girls in Midrand.

Together with our dedicated volunteers, we cooked for and shared a nutritious meal for the girls at the centre and revitalised the vegetable garden in preparation for the upcoming planting season. These simple yet powerful acts of service embodied the spirit of Nelson Mandela by making a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable children and young women.

The day was filled with compassion, collaboration, and hope, while also raising awareness of the importance of protecting children and young people from human trafficking and exploitation. We are proud to have strengthened employee volunteerism and community engagement, demonstrating that when organisations come together, we can create lasting impact and build stronger, more resilient communities.

In honor of , United Way South Africa partnered with one of our valued corporate donors for a day of meaningful service at the Tshepang Care Centre.

Tshepang Care Centre is a vital pillar in its community, providing:
* A safe home for 16 children
* Early Childhood Development (ECD) for 43 young learners
* Daily nutritious meals to over 600 children via its drop-in centre
* An on-site bakery producing fresh bread and traditional scones daily

Our donor volunteers brought enthusiasm, compassion, and a shared commitment to community upliftment. Together, we donated storybooks, STEM learning resources, stationery, toys, and essential baking ingredients, benefiting 64 children directly while leaving behind resources that will serve future generations.

Beyond the physical donations, the day was filled with storytelling, games, baking traditional scones, and sharing a meal, building genuine connections between volunteers, staff, and the children.

Employee volunteering goes beyond giving time. It strengthens corporate culture, builds cohesive teams, inspires purpose, and drives measurable, lasting impact in our local communities.

Together, we continue to honor Madiba’s legacy, one act of service, one shared meal, and one life changed at a time.

🌱 Bringing Hope to Life at Moduopo Primary School!

To celebrate , United Way South Africa joined hands with our amazing donors, parents, educators, and 1,090 bright young learners in Thembisa for a day of greening, growth, and community action. 💚

🌍 Making Every Moment Count | Nelson Mandela Day 2026 💙💛

What an inspiring and impactful day it was!

On 17 July 2026, United Way South Africa, in partnership with Anura, had the privilege of hosting 103 N4 and N6 learners from Central Johannesburg TVET College , Alexandra Campus for our Youth Employability & Career Development Day.

The day was filled with practical learning, inspiration, and giving back. Learners participated in engaging sessions on:
✅ CV Writing
✅ Interview Preparation
✅ LinkedIn Profile Development
✅ Career Coaching and Guidance

One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was seeing our volunteers and partners come together to prepare 247 sandwiches, ensuring every learner enjoyed a meal while participating in the programme. It was a wonderful reminder that small acts of kindness, when multiplied by people working together, create a lasting impact.

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partner Anura, the dedicated volunteers, and Central Johannesburg TVET College , Alexandra Campus for making this day such a resounding success.

Together, we are not only celebrating Nelson Mandela’s legacy, we are investing in South Africa’s future by equipping young people with the confidence, skills, and opportunities they need to thrive.

🌱 Nelson Mandela Month | Growing Hope Through Community Action

As we celebrate Nelson Mandela Month, we had the privilege of spending time with an inspiring group of dedicated women volunteers at the community garden supported by CJC Alexandra Campus in partnership with the Water Warrior Alexandra Project.

These remarkable women volunteer their time to cultivate fresh produce, which they sell to generate income while contributing to community development and food security. Their passion, resilience, and commitment demonstrate how local initiatives can create lasting, sustainable change.

Despite working tirelessly on a voluntary basis, they face significant challenges that limit their ability to expand their impact. With the right support, this community garden has the potential to create more employment opportunities, strengthen local food security, and generate sustainable income for many more families.

🌿 Vegetable shade nets to protect crops from harsh weather conditions.
💧 An irrigation system to ensure a reliable water supply.
🚰 A water storage tank and borehole rehabilitation to address ongoing water shortages.

🚀 Empowering the Next Generation of Innovators in Mamelodi

What an inspiring day! 💙

As part of our Youth Opportunity Programme, United Way South Africa visited IkamvaYouth SA Centre in Mamelodi to engage with learners from Grades 8–12, equipping them with the skills and mindset needed to succeed in tomorrow’s world.

💡 Session 1: Navigating the Digital Era
Together with Life of Purpose and students from the University of Pretoria (Tuks), learners explored the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence (AI), discovering how AI can enhance learning, strengthen digital literacy, and prepare them for future careers.

🚀 Session 2: Becoming “Idea Detectives”
Our Project Manager, Tshiamo Mokonoto, challenged learners to think like entrepreneurs by identifying problems in their communities and turning them into innovative solutions.

The biggest takeaway?
✨ Every problem is an opportunity waiting for someone brave enough to solve it.

Seeing these young minds embrace creativity, innovation, and leadership reminded us why investing in our youth matters. They are not only the leaders of tomorrow, they are the changemakers of today.
