Stronger NPOs. Greater Impact. Meet Friends of Free Wildlife. 🦉

Across South Africa, dedicated NPOs are doing extraordinary work every day — often behind the scenes, and often with limited resources.

Friends of Free Wildlife is one of them.

Dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of indigenous wildlife, Friends of Free Wildlife gives injured, sick and displaced wild animals a second chance. Their work helps ensure that animals receive the specialist care they need, with the ultimate goal of returning them to where they belong: the wild.

It’s organisations like Friends of Free Wildlife that remind us why strengthening the NPO sector matters. The stronger and more visible these organisations become, the more effectively they can focus on the work that creates real impact.

That’s what the iZinga Assist Annual Summit and Awards is about: bringing NPOs together, creating opportunities to connect with funders and peers, showcasing their impact and recognising the incredible work happening across the sector.

Following our October 2025 Summit in Cape Town, we're getting ready to bring our growing community together once again.

There’s something pretty special about seeing a whole pack of Harleys arrive at FFW, especially when they come bearing gifts. 🧡

We had a wonderful visit from the Harley Owners Group (HOG Johannesburg), who arrived with a generous donation of much needed heating pads, medications, kitty milk and animal carriers.

Even better, one of our very own is a HOG member, so we got to see Claudia in a slightly different light for the day. 😏🏍️

A huge thank you to the HOG members for choosing Friends of Free Wildlife as a charity to support and for taking the time to visit us.

Every item donated goes directly towards helping us care for the wild animals that come through our doors, and support like this genuinely makes a difference.

Our wish list has had a little refresh. 💚

Caring for wildlife takes a surprising amount of everyday stuff. Food, cleaning supplies, medical items, bedding and all the little essentials that help keep our patients comfortable while they recover.

A call was received on the 18th of May about a bullfrog which was found on a riding arena in Mnandi.

African bullfrogs (Pyxicephalus Adspersus), are a ToPS species (Threatened or Protected Species), which makes these types of cases extra special.

The bullfrog (Hermit) was severely emaciated, dehydrated and had puncture wounds and bruising on the right-hand side of its body. He was put onto a course of treatment for the wounds and given a specialised diet.

Hermit showed no interest in eating and was sent to Craighall Vet on 22 May for a second assessment. As there was some improvement, he was sent back to the centre for continuation of care and rehabilitation. A couple of days later, he took a downward turn and was returned to Craighall Vet for further tests which revealed that he had the Hepatitis Virus. The initial best outcome was euthanasia.

Then in stepped Dr Mark, who decided that he was going to try and save our Hermit by treating him with antibiotics. Hermit remained in hospital for well over a month and after being given a clean bill of health, he was returned on 14 August.

Now, Hermit is well on his way to being released, he is eating well has put back all the lost weight, plus extra and will remain with us until the weather warms when he will then be released into a suitable area, where he can resume his natural way of life.

Thank you, Craighall Veterinary Hospital and Dr Mark, for the care, support and for saving another life.

This is a sad story with a very happy ending. ❤️

This beautiful spotted eagle-owl came to us through our good friends at Owl Rescue Centre. To quote Brendan Murray: “Wildlife belongs in the wild, not tied up with cable ties and sold on the side of the road for a hundred bucks.” He also reminds us that owls are arguably among the most persecuted species in South Africa.

This ‘persecuted’ owl has been with us since early July and Claudius and his amazing team have given this gorgeous bird the care, patience and rehabilitation he needed to find his way home.

Yesterday his story came full circle. 🦉💛

Doug, the man who rescued him, arrived to collect ‘his’ owl for one very special mission — to return him to familiar territory back in the wild.

🔸Big box.
🔸Big yellow eyes.
🔸Big emotions.

These are the stories that motivate and inspire us to keep doing what we do.

Thank you to Doug for saving him from his cruel captors. Thank you Owl Rescue Centre for trusting us with his care. This is a story of collaboration, sharing, compassion and, ultimately, freedom.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand at the recent RESCUE EXPO! 🐾❤️🎉

We sold lots of raffle tickets and bird feeders, and we were also blessed with a generous donation of dog food and blankets. 🐶🦜🧺

A SECOND CHANCE AT FREEDOM
A Brown House Snake was surrendered to FFW on 22 August 2026, having been in captivity for approximately 10 years.

After a short stay with us, and a thorough examination by reptile specialist, Dr Mark of Craighall Veterinary Hospital, he received a clean bill of health. It was recommended that this little snake was sufficiently wild and should be released as soon as possible.

And so, he was released into a safe environment to live out the rest of his life as a free and happy snake. 💚

Brown House Snakes are non-venomous constrictors and are classified as harmless by the African Snakebite Institute. They are valuable indigenous species worth protecting and educating the public about.

As natural predators, they play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to control rodents and other small prey.
