A HUGE THANK YOU!

Last week brought not one, but two wonderful donations of food and essential supplies for the animals in our care.

Our heartfelt thanks to Lamelle Research Laboritories and to the incredible students of St Stithians College for thinking of Friends of Free Wildlife and generously collecting and donating much-needed supplies.

Every animal that comes through our doors needs food, care and resources on their journey towards rehabilitation and, wherever possible, release back into the wild.

Donations like these make a very real difference — not only to the animals, but to the people working tirelessly to give them that second chance.

To everyone involved in collecting, organising and delivering these donations: thank you for choosing to support our wildlife. 💚

WE NEED YOU BACK!

For years, our MySchool supporters have helped Friends of Free Wildlife simply by doing their everyday shopping, at absolutely no extra cost to them.

But things have changed.

The transition from MySchool to MyDifference ends on 31 October 2026. From 1 November, the funding we receive through the programme will be based solely on the number of MyDifference members who have chosen Friends of Free Wildlife as their beneficiary.

And right now, we need your help.

Our supporters have dropped from 631 in June 2025 to just 156 in June 2026. That's a loss of approximately 75% of our support.

If you supported us through MySchool, or if you'd simply like an incredibly easy way to help indigenous wildlife, please join MyDifference and select Friends of Free Wildlife as your beneficiary.

It costs you nothing but those contributions add up, helping us continue the rescue, rehabilitation and release of indigenous wildlife that desperately needs a second chance.

* Go into your Woolies App and it will tell you that there are updates available.
* It may ask you to log in again so the system can pull through your info from the old version.
* There are 5 tabs at the bottom - choose the Loyalty tab (used to be Reward) and then select Causes (beneficiaries)
* Friends of Free Wildlife is listed under "Environment" and not "Animal Welfare". Once in Environment, scroll down and select FFW as your Cause to support 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Happy Birthday to our very special Claudius!

Every creature, no matter how small, overlooked or seemingly insignificant, is important to Clauds. To him, every life matters and every animal deserves kindness, care and a chance.

That compassion is at the heart of everything he does at Friends of Free Wildlife. His dedication to the animals is unwavering, and we are incredibly lucky to have someone who cares for each of them as deeply as he does.

Thank you, Clauds, for the countless lives you’ve touched, the animals you’ve fought for, and the enormous heart you bring to FFW every single day.

We hope today you feel just how loved and appreciated you are.

We are delighted to showcase our newly renovated wildlife rehabilitation clinics, made possible through the generous support of our amazing partners,Animal Survival International .

Clinic 1 – Examination & Assessment
Every patient starts here. Our team carries out a thorough examination, assesses injuries and illness, and develops an individual treatment plan.

Clinic 2 – ICU: Treatment & Stabilisation
Our Intensive Care Unit is where critically ill and injured animals receive emergency treatment, intensive monitoring and around-the-clock care.

Clinic 3 – Baby Clinic
This is our nursery for nestlings and fledglings, where young birds receive specialised feeding and care until they’re ready to grow and develop.

Clinic 4 – Quarantine
Animals with contagious diseases or neurological symptoms are cared for here in isolation, helping protect every other patient in our care.

Clinic 5 – Testing & Sterilisation
This clinic is dedicated to diagnostic testing and maintaining the highest standards of hygiene, ensuring equipment and supplies are ready for every patient.

Clinic 6 – Main Clinic
Here, recovering patients continue to heal, regain their strength and learn to self-feed before progressing to outdoor rehabilitation and, ultimately, release back into the wild.

They may look cute, but they don't belong on your couch.

Every year, wildlife rehabilitation centres receive meerkats that were once kept as pets. Many arrive with poor nutrition, weakened bones, behavioural problems, or without the skills they need to survive in the wild.

Unlike dogs or cats, meerkats are highly specialised wild animals. They live in large family groups, roam vast territories, spend their days digging and foraging, and rely on complex social structures that simply cannot be recreated in a human home.

Once a meerkat has been raised as a pet, returning it to the wild is rarely straightforward. Rehabilitation takes time, specialised care, and often the help of other rehabilitation centres to give these animals the best possible chance.

If you know someone considering keeping a meerkat as a pet, please share this post. Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to protect South Africa's wildlife.
