TEACH South Africa was started by the South African business community in direct response to finding ways to improve South Africa’s economy. After years of researching educational initiatives around the world, the TEACH South Africa founding members decided to be part of the solution by placing highly skilled and motivated recent university graduates in the classroom. This Women’s Month, we honour Lillian Ngoyi, a courageous activist, leader and organiser who played a significant role in the struggle against apartheid and the fight for women’s rights.

As the first woman elected to the executive committee of the African National Congress, Lillian Ngoyi broke barriers in a movement largely led by men. She became a powerful advocate for equality and was instrumental in mobilising women against discriminatory laws. In 1956, she helped lead the historic Women’s March to the Union Buildings, where thousands of women stood together in protest against the apartheid pass laws.

Her legacy reminds us that leadership is not only about holding a position. It is about having the courage to speak up, stand together and challenge injustice, even when doing so comes at a personal cost.

Today, we honour Albertina Sisulu, a nurse, activist and leader whose life was defined by courage, service and a commitment to creating a better society.

Known as the “Mother of the Nation”, she played a significant role in the struggle against apartheid while advocating for education, healthcare and the empowerment of women and young people. Through her unwavering dedication to others, she became a powerful voice for change and an inspiration to generations that followed.

Her legacy reminds us that true leadership is rooted in courage, compassion and service. It is about using your voice to uplift others and creating opportunities for those who come after you.

Today, we celebrate Nokutela Dube, an educator and pioneer whose life was deeply connected to education, community development and opportunity.

She was among the women who helped establish educational institutions and contributed to building spaces where African communities could learn and grow.

Her story reminds us that education does more than prepare individuals for the future. It helps build communities capable of creating that future.

We continue to believe in that same power: educate, empower and create opportunities for the next generation.

This Women’s Month, TEACH South Africa celebrates the remarkable women whose courage, leadership and contributions have helped shape the future we know today.

We begin with Charlotte Maxeke, an educator, activist and pioneer who dedicated her life to education, women's empowerment and the advancement of African communities.

As one of the first Black South African women to earn a university degree, Charlotte Maxeke broke barriers at a time when opportunities for women were severely limited. Through education, advocacy and community leadership, she paved the way for generations who followed.

Her story reminds us that education is not simply about obtaining knowledge. It is about what we choose to do with that knowledge and the doors we open for others.

We honour her legacy by continuing to create opportunities for young people to learn, lead and shape their futures.

Empowered women empower the nation.
