ADVANCING MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY IN CAPE TOWN

A significant milestone has been reached to protect and support vulnerable residents. Leader of the Opposition in the Western Cape Legislature, Khalid Sayed, has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Luc-Lynn Fondling, representing the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR)—a global nonprofit mental health watchdog.

The core goal of this partnership is to create an accessible, localized refuge for community members. Moving forward, the Cape Town Central Constituency Office will be utilized on a fortnightly basis as a safe, dedicated space.

Here, vulnerable residents and victims of alleged abuse within the mental health system can securely access support and have their needs documented and captured.

No one should have to navigate their mental health journey or systemic challenges alone.

This safe space is here to ensure your voice is heard.

WHEN THE WARNINIG LABEL READS LIKE A HORROR MOVIE

True informed consent requires absolute transparency between healthcare consumers and the pharmaceutical industry.

A widely circulated video by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) demonstrates this gap in public awareness by simply reading a standard Patient Information Leaflet out loud. The sheer volume of severe behavioral and physiological risks highlighted on these official packaging inserts points to a critical need for deeper patient education. As the conversation around mental health care options evolves, prioritizing comprehensive patient risk assessment remains a paramount legal and ethical necessity.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY & LOVED ONES!

Did you know that the public psychiatric system has been aggressively expanding its mental health units and screening programs right here in Khayelitsha?

Instead of addressing the real root causes of our community’s struggles—like extreme poverty, trauma, and substance distress—the system is heavily relying on cheap, dangerous chemical containment.

Normal human reactions to life’s hardships are being misdiagnosed, and our youth are being put on heavy cocktails of psychiatric drugs for months on end.

Once caught in this system, our people often lose their basic human rights because they do not have expensive legal defense to fight back. We must protect our own!

Come to the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) Exhibit.
Learn the truth, know your legal rights, and find out how to safeguard your children, family, friends, and neighbors from forced psychiatric drugging and institutional abuse.

WHEN: Open Daily this week, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
WHERE: Isivivana Centre, 8 Mzala Street, Khayelitsha
Next to Khayelitsha Resource Centre / Taxi Rank

ADMISSION: 100% FREE and open to everyone!

What you will discover inside:

Know Your Rights:
How the Mental Health Care Act is being used by authorities and how you can legally protect your loved ones.

The Truth About the Drugs:

Real Community Alternatives:
How we can support our families through trauma and addiction without turning them into chemical zombies.

Do not let your family members become another statistic in the hospital wards down the road.

Knowledge is our greatest shield.

See you there tomorrow!

COMMUNITY LEADERS UNITING IN KHAYELITSHA TO LAUNCH LANDMARK MENTAL WELLNESS EXHIBITION

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – 1 JUNE 2026 — Monday at 1:00 PM, the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) Africa officially opened its landmark educational exhibition at the Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha.

The opening ceremony drew members of civil society, youth and community members gathered to confront systemic psychiatric abuses and advocate for holistic, rights-based mental wellness.

A distinguished panel of community advocates and leaders also addressed the audience:

Revered Richard Keelt opened with prayer.

Themba Lumbha, representing the Men of Integrity GBV Men’s Health NGO, spoke urgently on the impact of mental distress within gender-based violence frameworks and men's health.

Councilor Linda Maxeke offered local civic support, emphasizing the need for accessible, dignified, and safe wellness alternatives within Khayelitsha.

We also had a well know community activist, Luce-Lynne Fondling who is in charge of the CCHR Mitchel plain team. She has been working very hard in her community to educate them about the danger of substance abuse, their human rights and psychiatric misdiagnosis and abusive treatments.

The exhibition provides a harrowing historical timeline, detailing psychiatry’s dark legacy in South Africa—from profit-driven apartheid-era psychiatric camps to modern challenges like chemical restraints and polypharmacy.

"We are calling for a profound structural shift in South Africa's national mental wellness strategy," stated Madimetsa Nkoana, Public Relations Officer for CCHR Africa.

"Healing the mind while ignoring the soul is like watering the leaves and forgetting the roots.

Our national strategy must actively integrate faith, traditional, and spiritual networks as the primary line of community support."

The exhibition is now officially open to the public at the Isivivana Centre, and admission is free.
