Nkangala District Municipality Launches Just Transition Programme
The Nkangala District Municipality officially launched its Just Transition Programme on 22 May 2026 at the Nkangala District Municipality Offices in Middelburg.
The launch marked an important step in strengthening the district’s response to South Africa’s evolving energy transition. The programme is a strategic initiative aimed at building municipal capability, improving investment readiness, supporting economic diversification, and positioning the district to respond proactively to both the opportunities and challenges linked to the transition.
The event served not only as the formal commencement of the programme, but also as a strategic engagement platform to strengthen alignment between government, municipalities, business, development partners, state-owned entities and civil society. This collaborative approach is essential to ensuring that the Just Transition is implemented in a coordinated, inclusive and practical manner.
The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) attended the launch and delivered a presentation highlighting green economy projects and opportunities within the district.
MGCA’s participation reflected the strong working relationship between the Agency and the Nkangala District Municipality, as well as their shared commitment to advancing a Just Transition that supports economic resilience, job creation and sustainable development in the district and the wider province.
Through continued collaboration, the Nkangala District Just Transition Programme will focus on several key strategic areas of support.
The first is the establishment of a District Just Transition Project Management Office (PMO). This PMO will be linked to broader national and district transition structures and will support coordination, implementation oversight, stakeholder alignment and project facilitation.
The second area of support is local economic development and transition planning. The programme will assist municipalities to strengthen their development planning and identify practical economic opportunities that are aligned with the transition.
The third focus area is the development of viable and investment-ready projects. Support will be provided to identify, prepare and strengthen catalytic projects that can attract investment and unlock sustainable economic growth within the district.
The launch of the Nkangala District Just Transition Programme represents a significant milestone in advancing a coordinated, locally driven and investment-focused transition. By working together, the Nkangala District Municipality, MGCA and other key stakeholders can help ensure that the Just Transition delivers practical benefits for communities, municipalities, and the provincial economy.
