The Winners are....

The 2026 Mpumalanga MSME Green Innovation Challenge saw eleven (11) enterprises pitch their innovative businesses to a panel of Judges with the hope of being one of the top three (3) winners at the end of the day.

First place in the 2026 edition of the Innovation Challenge went to Ma Flo Farm. Ma Flo Farm, represented by Ngobeni, presented an agricultural enterprise focused on rehabilitating former mining land through sustainable farming.

The farm currently cultivates four hectares of h**p for medicinal and value-added products, with plans to expand into h**p processing and manufacturing. The model promotes land restoration, job creation, environmental sustainability and local economic development.

Ma Flo Farm walked away with R150 000, which was sponsored by Seriti Green.

Second place in the 2026 edition of the Innovation Challenge went to JumpStart Your Career. JumpStart Your Career, represented by Dzunani Aluta Mathebula, presented a solution that is a mobile, off-grid manufacturing factory that converts recycled plastic waste into affordable construction products such as screws, tile spacers and wall plugs.

Powered by renewable energy and supported by AI-driven quality control, it enables local production while reducing plastic waste and reliance on imported products. The model aims to lower construction costs, create green jobs and support township and rural industrialisation in Mpumalanga.

JumpStart your career walked away with R75 000, which was sponsored by Sasol.

Third place in the 2026 edition of the Innovation Challenge went to Thlompho Investments. Thlompho Investments, represented by Tiisetso Ngwenya, presented Perseverance AgriPark as an integrated solution to address food insecurity, unemployment, environmental degradation, and inefficient land use.

This model combines climate-smart agriculture, waste-to-productivity initiatives, value addition, skills development, enterprise incubation and land rehabilitation. It aims to transform waste into productive resources while creating sustainable livelihoods and serving as a replicable model for municipalities and communities.

Thlompho Investments walked away with R50 000, which was sponsored by ENERTRAG.

The 2026 Mpumalanga MSME Green Innovation Challenge brought together innovators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders for a powerful day of collaboration and inspiration. Hosted at the Eastdene Community Hall in the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, the event highlighted bold solutions driving Mpumalanga’s transition to a low‑carbon, inclusive economy.

The MEC for Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Ms Jesta Sidell and the HOD for Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development and Tourism, Ms Immy Serakalala, presided over the event as the top 12 finalists pitched their innovative enterprises.

From renewable energy technologies to green hydrogen and battery storage, participants showcased ideas that are shaping a sustainable future for our province and beyond.

This milestone gathering was made possible through the valued support of JUST SA, Seriti Green, Sasol, and ENERTRAG, whose commitment to green innovation continues to empower local MSMEs and foster meaningful partnerships.

Together, we are building resilience, creating opportunities, and ensuring that Mpumalanga remains at the forefront of sustainable development.

From Mine Land to New Opportunities!

The Mpumalanga Green Cluster Agency (MGCA) hosted the Mpumalanga Mine Rehabilitated Land and Repurposing Technical Task Team on 13 August 2026, bringing stakeholders together to drive meaningful conversations around the sustainable repurposing of mine land in Mpumalanga.

The meeting explored progress on the Task Team’s work, project prioritisation and a range of exciting projects focused on repurposing and redevelopment. Stakeholders also shared innovative ideas around beekeeping and pollination parks, ecological infrastructure, and community-focused interventions in artisanal and small-scale mining.

These initiatives demonstrate the potential to turn rehabilitated mine land into spaces that support economic opportunities, environmental restoration and stronger communities.

The journey towards a greener Mpumalanga is a collective one, and through collaboration, innovation and purposeful action, we can unlock new possibilities from our mining legacy.
