COMMUNITY FINALLY ACCESS NEWTOWN LIBRARY
The State of the Art Newtown Public Library has opened its doors following its completion a year ago. The newly built Public Library will be one of the most treasured cultural and learning spaces within Mpumalanga Province.
The facility (Public Library) was established following the community outcry in Newtown during Integrated Development Plan (IDP) consultative meetings about the lack of library in the area.
The MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Leah Mabuza alongside the Executive Mayor, Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela and Council Speaker, Cllr Zandile Joseph Ngubeni, led the official ceremony on Friday, 14 August 2026. Councillors and Government Executives joined them.
Mayor Masilela welcomed all the attendees during the ceremony. He said, “We are happy to be here for the wonderful ceremony. I would like to welcome everyone here to witness the real meaning of service delivery”, said Mayor Masilela.
In her keynote address, commended everyone who contributed to the initiative. She said, “Today we stand at the intersection of history, heritage and hope. We are here to celebrate not just the opening of a building but connecting residents with a fountain of wisdom. This opening restores a space for knowledge, inspiration and community connection. As we celebrate this achievement, we reaffirm our commitment to making knowledge accessible to all residents. As parents, we should encourage our children to make good use of this library and not commend children for rooming around the streets. To our children start today to build your future”, said MEC Mabuza.
The Public Library balanced heritage preservation with modern features including computer Lab, reading rooms, study areas, and archival storage. Residents will also access free Wi-Fi. Within the yard, there is a vegetable garden.
The Political Leaders concluded the proceedings with planting of trees.
