NSRI Melkbosstrand recently reported that they were no longer continueing with their lifeguard program. This was interpreted that there would no longer be lifeguards on the beach at Melkbosstrand. NSRI Melkbosstrand would like to clarify this.
1. The City has paid seasonal lifeguards on the beach throughtout the season until April 2024.
2. The withdrawal of the NSRI VOLUNTEER lifeguards will in no way impact the availability of lifeguards on the beach.
3. At no time, will the Melkbosstrand Beach be left without seasonal lifeguards.
4. The decision to end the NSRI lifeguard program in no way impact the Rescue Station and its ability to respond to sea rescue emergencies, including supporting the City's lifeguards, if needed.
5. Lifeguards play an important role in keeping our beach safe for all users and for this reason, the City employs lifeguards to perform the required services at Melkbosstrand.
6. Therefore, please note that it is ONLY the NSRI volunteer lifeguard program that is ending at Melkbosstrand and this does not impact the seasonal lifeguards employed by the City of Cape Town who are on duty daily until April 2024.

An early morning lifeguard training session starting at the Sandmann’s for underwater confidence and breath-hold training and then off to the beach for a killer workout and speedo swims. What a great training session.

NSRI Melkbosstrand will be training this morning (Saturday, 16 July) with a rescue helicopter at our rescue station in Melkbosstrand. Training should take place from around 08:30 until 12:00.
We request the public to avoid the NSRI helipad area and the downwash path of the helicopter when it approaches and departs from the helipad.
Public who would like to watch should be aware of sand and debris that may become airborne when the helicopter is overhead as well as the added noise so do exercise caution and do take care of very young children.

In less-than-ideal conditions with continuous rain and a cold wind coming off the sea, 18 hopefuls came to tryout to become NSRI Lifeguards.
The 18 hopefuls were given a brief overview of the requirements and expectations that lay ahead of them. They were then taken through their paces on the beach and finally, a run-swim-run test. The beach run and run-swim-run was done against the clock with a cut-off time. Watch this space to see who makes the cut.
(Apologies for the quality of the photos due to the rain and mist)
