Mondays in Phumlani: Growing in Confidence, Character, and Communication

Every Monday afternoon, Sawubona Project runs three separate after-school programs at three locations in Phumlani, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Two are pictured here.

At our first site, children participate in our Becoming Me Life Skills Program, where they learn important lessons about character, healthy relationships, decision-making, peer pressure, communication, and personal responsibility. This week, the group explored the topic of peer pressure, engaging in discussion, activities, and reflection as they learned how to make wise choices and stand confidently in their values.

At our second site, children participate in our Learning to Speak English Program, where they build confidence and practical communication skills through interactive activities, games, songs, and conversation. For many of these children, English opens doors to educational opportunities and future employment possibilities.

Our third group, Learning2Lead students, are studying for exams. We'll catch up with them next term.

What we love most is seeing the joy, energy, and growing confidence of these young people. Every lesson, every conversation, and every relationship is helping to build a stronger foundation for their future.

Thank you to everyone who supports Sawubona Project and makes these opportunities possible. Together, we are investing in the next generation—one child, one lesson, and one relationship at a time.

End-of-term fun day at Phakani Primary School. ⚽💙

As learners prepare for exams and school break, Friday was filled with laughter, games, soccer, conversations, and meaningful moments together.

One of the most special moments of the day was walking into a classroom and finding a heartfelt message waiting for our team on the chalkboard.

Moments like these remind us that lasting impact is often built quietly — through consistency, encouragement, presence, and relationship over time.

To the learners and staff at Phakani Primary: thank you for welcoming us so warmly this term. We’re proud of each of you and cheering you on as exams begin. 💙

There was laughter, games, soccer, conversations, and one very special surprise waiting for us on the classroom chalkboard.

Moments like these remind us that meaningful impact is often built through consistency, presence, encouragement, and relationship over time.

To the learners and staff at Phakani Primary — thank you for welcoming us so warmly this term. We are proud of each of you as you head into exams and the school break.

We’re cheering you on. 💙

27 April

"South Africa observes and commemorates Freedom Day on 27 April every year.

The day is a celebration of the liberation of South Africans from a long period of colonialism, apartheid and the white minority domination these systems entrenched. The 27th April marks the day in 1994, when all South Africans, despite race, freely participated in the elections that heralded our constitutional democracy."
