Celebrating the Trees of Riverside Reserve - National Arbor Week (1-7 September)

This Arbor Week, we’re celebrating some of the most important residents of Riverside Reserve: our trees.

The Reserve is home to a remarkable diversity of indigenous vegetation, with 366 plant species recorded across 86 families. Its woodlands include magnificent kiaat and marula trees, alongside species such as wild pear, monkey thorn, bushwillow and African wattle.

Four tree species found here (kiaat, water berry, red ivory and marula) are protected under the National Forests Act, highlighting just how valuable these trees are to our natural heritage.

Along the Nels River, the trees form part of a Vulnerable Lowveld Riverine Forest ecosystem, providing habitat and an important ecological corridor for wildlife.

That is why protecting our trees matters.

At Riverside Reserve, caring for the environment means protecting indigenous vegetation, removing invasive alien plants and preserving the natural habitats that make this greenbelt such a special part of Mbombela.

This Arbor Week, take a moment to look up — and appreciate the trees standing quietly around us.

Spring at Riverside Reserve

Spring has sprung at Riverside Reserve!

As nature awakens, the Riverside Reserve comes alive with colourful butterflies, birds, insects and fresh new growth — a beautiful reminder of the incredible biodiversity around us.

Our Nursery is growing too!
This spring, our nursery continues to nurture indigenous plants that will help restore and strengthen natural habitats within the reserve. Every seedling planted is a step towards creating a healthier environment for wildlife and future generations.

From our nursery to the reserve, we’re growing a greener Riverside — one plant at a time.

Come experience the beauty of spring, discover the life within our reserve, and join us in protecting, preserving and growing our natural environment.

World Lizard Day – 14 August 2026.

Did you know there are more than 6,000 kinds of lizards on Earth?
To celebrate World Lizard Day, we’re highlighting six lizards found in the Riverside Reserve.

Say hello to Wilhelm’s Flat Lizard or known in Afrikaans as Wilhelm se Platakkedis. The species is particularly special to the Riverside Reserve. It is endemic to Mpumalanga and was recorded in the Reserve’s Outcrop Shrubland. Its flat body shape allows it to squeeze into extremely thin rock fissures to escape predators. It is also known for its striking coloration, with males typically displaying beautiful iridescent colours, as well as its fast and agile movements across smooth rock surfaces.

Also found in the Reserve are:

Common Giant Plated Lizard
Rainbow Skink
Striped Skink
Variable Skink
Common Dwarf Gecko

Skinks, geckos and other species such as plated and flat lizards are all part of the broader lizard group. They share many characteristics and play an important role in the ecosystem. Many feed on insects, spiders and other small invertebrates, making them valuable members of the Reserve’s natural food web.

So next time you’re walking through the Riverside Reserve, keep your eyes open — you might spot one of our six little reptiles.
