Today, the City of Mbombela, Local Economic Development and the Bylaw Unit, with the assistance of Van Wettens Breakdowns, removed non-compliant mobile kitchen and food stalls in Brown Street and one dormant in Anderson Street.

The initiative was spearheaded and coordinated by the Nelspruit City Improvement District.

Property owners and businesses within the NCID geographical area had raised concerns regarding these informal trading structures obstructing shopfronts and pedestrian movement.

It is essential that owners of such mobile units familiarize themselves with the relevant bylaws and regulations within the municipal area.

Research has revealed that over 50% of informal traders in the CBD operate without valid permits, with some not adhering to designated trading areas and others not being legally owned by the on-site operators.

The Nelspruit City Improvement District appreciates the collaborative efforts of the City of Mbombela and the support of local businesses. We are positive that this is only the start of a much needed regulatory process that will provide opportunities and remove Illigal activities.

*INFORMAL TRADERS NOTICE*
Bussiness and property owners in the Nelspruit City Improvement District please note that in partnership with City of Mbombela we will be conducting verification of informal traders from 1 July 2026.

In the process of verification this informal part of our economy will also be given the chance to re-register if all information eg South African ownership are confirmed.

A number of informal food caravans have already been checked and because of non-compliance be removed on Friday.

It is important to note that

1. ALL traders are required to operate on their designated / allocated spaces.
2. After this action informal traders must have a card identifying the person and the location.
3. The NCID invite property owners and businesses to engage with us where needed.

The NCID appreciate the informal trade within the framework of the law.

For example the moment the wheels are removed from a trailor and it is not removed every evening it change category.
