"We have to ensure that our universities today are spaces in which the greatest ideas are generated and where solutions for the advancement of our continent Africa are found. We all value navel gazing and blue skies research focal areas, however, we have a world to transform practically and must devote time to that," - Dr Naledi Pandor speaking at the UFH 2024 Spring Graduation.

Altogether, 537 degrees will be conferred by the Chancellor of the University, Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza SC. Of the degrees, 406 are undergrad and 131 postgrads.

The graduation will be held over two sessions. The morning session will feature students from the Faculties of Education, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Science and Agriculture. The afternoon session to commence at 1 pm will see students from the Faculties of Management and Commerce, Health Sciences, and Law cross the stage to collect their hard-earned degrees.

At age 20, Ms Fakazile Mbasane from KwaBhaca (Mount Frere), is this season’s youngest graduand, she will be conferred a Bachelor of Theology. Fakazile, who has set her sights on being a psychologist, has currently applied for her honours degree in Psychology here at UFH.

Mr Mlulami Goodman Mdani, aged 69, is our most senior graduand. He will be conferred a Doctoral Degree in Public Administration.

Ms Lindelwa Mpaka from NU 1 Mdantsane, is our youngest PhD graduand, at the age of 28.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗨𝗙𝗛, 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘄𝗮 𝗠𝗽𝗮𝗸𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗡𝗨 𝟭 𝗠𝗱𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗲, 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆

In a remarkable achievement, 28-year-old Ms Lindelwa Mpaka, now Dr Mpaka, from NU 1 Mdantsane has been recognised as the youngest PhD graduate at the University of Fort Hare (UFH)2024 Spring Graduation.

Her groundbreaking research in microbiology has set new standards in environmental sustainability and waste management, earning her a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology.

Dr Mpaka embarked on her academic journey at UFH in 2013, beginning her studies at just 16 years old. Completing her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and microbiology in record time, she continued to excel academically, earning cm laude in both her Honours and Master’s degrees.

She began her PhD journey in 2019. Her research, titled "Genome mining and secretome delineation in keratinolytic bacteria that valorised chicken feathers into valuable compounds,” addresses the challenge of keratinous waste, such as chicken feathers, which are typically difficult to degrade.
