The journey of human progress has begun and persons living with disabilities are at the centre of it.

Today at Genesis Youth Centre - Mhlambanyatsi, we were honoured to host Mr. Tsepo Ndlangamandla from AgriSETA.

His visit affirms a powerful truth: true agricultural transformation must be inclusive. When we equip persons with disabilities with skills, dignity and opportunity in the agricultural value chain, we are not just doing charity, we are building resilient food systems and a future that leaves no one behind.

South Africa's most pressing development challenges do not sit in neat, isolated boxes.

Issues like unemployment, poverty and food insecurity are deeply interconnected "wicked problems" with many shifting causes. Because no single entity can solve them alone, intentional collaboration is the only way forward.

True partnership means combining distinct strengths around a shared goal: communities bring invaluable local realities, NPOs provide long-term facilitation, business offers funding and systems, researchers provide vital data, and government provides extension services.

By working collaboratively from different angles rather than operating in silos, we unlock resource channels, establish deep communal trust, and build lasting, resilient food systems nationwide.

Agriculture remains one of South Africa's most powerful levers for reducing poverty, driving change at the household, local, and national levels. It supports families directly with home production and farm-based incomes, creates local jobs and stimulates rural economies by generating demand for inputs, transport and services.

In fact, evidence shows that economic growth in agriculture is often two or three times more effective at reducing poverty than equivalent growth in non-agricultural sectors. For poor households, growing food acts as a vital economic buffer during financial crises or price spikes, directly cutting spending on staples and improving overall diet quality.

By investing in agricultural development, we aren't just planting seeds; we are building a practical, proven pathway to lift households out of poverty and lower food prices nationwide.

For agricultural programmes, measuring meaningful change is essential for credibility, long-term funding and sustainability.

To protect communities and prove real returns on sustainability investments, we must look beyond what is easiest to count.

It is no longer just about tracking inputs and activities; we need to measure the actual, qualitative changes in people's lives, food security status and household resilience.

To mark World Cleanup Day, we headed out to Genesis Netball Court for a community clean-up drive, our first since our World Environmental Day celebration with Lowveld National Botanical Garden.

Protecting our environment and keeping our communities clean takes all of us. We spent the day tidying our netball court.

A cleaner world starts with the choices we make every day. This World Cleanup, let's remember: reducing waste isn't just about picking up litter. It's about preventing waste before it happens.

For over 15 years, Babeijoba in Mayurbhanj, a small village in Odisha, has stayed litter-free and plastic-free. Not through a big government budget or outside funding, but through its own community showing up, day after day, year after year.

What's even more special is what sits alongside that cleanliness. Villagers continue to celebrate their Santhal & Ho heritage through vibrant wall art, music and dance, keeping their culture alive.

Clean surroundings. Strong community. Living culture. Sometimes, that's all it takes.

Real change doesn't always start with big policy. Sometimes it starts with a small village that decided not to wait.

Can we pull this off for a year, let alone 15 years? Because a cleaner Mhlambanyatsi is not just about picking up waste. It's about changing how we think about what we call "waste."

A person can consume enough daily calories and still be profoundly malnourished.

"Hidden hunger" is the chronic deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin A, iron, iodine, and zinc, that occurs quietly because individuals may not look undernourished in the traditional sense.

In South Africa, the underlying diet tells the story. Children consistently show high consumption of refined starches, while historical national data like the SANHANES-1 survey recorded a mean dietary diversity score of just 4.2 out of 9 food groups.

This has triggered a complex "double burden" of malnutrition, where undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies sit directly alongside rising rates of childhood overweight and obesity. The consequences are severe, permanently impairing cognitive development, weakening immunity, and limiting future economic potential.

Combating a systemic public health crisis of this scale requires deeply coordinated, collaborative action between sectors to diversify local food systems.

The next big netball audience in Mpumalanga already exists. It just hasn't been properly organised yet.

Across Mpumalanga, netball is played every day outside of professional structures, in local tournaments, academies, colleges, communities and neighbourhood grounds.

The real opportunity isn't simply about discovering more talent. It's about creating better ways for participation to become visible, connected and valuable.

When competitions become more structured and fair, athletes gain the opportunity to be seen.

When those stories are documented and distributed, audiences have something to follow.

And when an audience begins to care consistently, commercial possibilities can naturally develop around the netball property.

That progression doesn't happen automatically. It requires thoughtful competition formats, technology, media, operations and partnerships working around netball as a sport.

Perhaps the question isn't only: "Where will the next audience come from?" It might be: "Which existing netball community hasn't been given a platform yet?"

With that in mind, we sincerely appreciate our partners who believe in and invest in the development of Genesis Netball Club, the Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation (DCSR), and the Sanlam Foundation. Your support keeps our girls on the court and our dream alive.
