African Solutions to African Problems

African Solutions to African Problems ASAP was founded in 2004 in response to the devastation of HIV and extreme poverty on children’s lives in remote, rural communities in South Africa.

ASAP empowers proactive women and youth to create and drive poverty alleviation initiatives in rural communities: ensuring basic rights of children, shifting gender based violence, providing victim support and creating food security farming enterprises. ASAP is a small, well-established organisation that delivers a big impact by partnering with proactive rural women to uplift themselves, transform

their communities and bring hope to orphans and vulnerable children. We benefit from fundraising arms in the UK and US, and operate in the Alfred Nzo district, Eastern Cape: South Africa’s poorest municipality (IRR 2019) and part of the world’s hardest-hit HIV area. Our Vision: Thriving, resilient rural communities where all children develop optimally. Our Mission: to connect rural community members, particularly women and youth, to their own power to identify challenges and create positive change towards poverty alleviation in their communities.

Clean Water Is a Seed: Hope Flows in Mzongwana Village

Mzongwana Village rejoices as clean water flows for the first time.

For far too long, the community depended on a shallow, muddy stream shared with livestock. What should have been a basic human right was instead a daily struggle for survival, health and dignity. That painful chapter is now closed with the official opening of the village water taps.

This life-changing milestone was made possible through the generous support of the Eastern Cape Education Trust and the HCI Foundation, alongside the technical expertise and hard work of Innovation: Africa.

The hands-on leadership of Inkosi Baleni inspired confidence among the partners to make this investment, knowing it will be deeply valued and well-maintained. ASAP was honoured to serve as the local partner and will continue to support Mzongwana as they leverage this new asset to create an abundant future.

Clean water is a seed. When planted in a community, it grows into healthier children, stronger families, dignity for households and hope for generations to come. Mzongwana did not only receive water; it received a new beginning.

GBVF community awareness 's Day celebration

Even though the date changed, the purpose remained the same, to create a safe space for the community to reflect, learn, engage, and have honest conversations about issues that affect our homes, families, and community.

Today’s awareness covered important topics such as Positive Parenting, GBVF, Self-Acceptance, Healing, Mental Health, Sexual and Reproductive Health, HIV Awareness, Access to Justice, and breaking the culture of silence.

The session was deeply emotional and impactful. Many community members were visibly touched, and tears were shed as the conversations reminded us of the pain, silence, and struggles that many people carry every day.

The program also included traditional plays performed by community mothers, which brought real-life issues closer to the people.

It was a reminder that awareness is not only about sharing information. It is also about creating moments where people feel seen, heard, supported, and encouraged to begin their healing journey.

As ASAP, we remain committed to walking with communities, encouraging open conversations, strengthening families, and reminding people that no one should suffer in silence.

Freedom Day was not just celebrated… it was lived.

Through powerful conversations and vibrant cultural expression, we reminded our community what true freedom means today:

✨ Self-acceptance owning your truth, your voice, your identity.
✨ Sexual health & reproduction knowledge is power, and power protects.
✨ GBVF awareness breaking the silence, standing together, choosing safety and dignity.

From the rhythm of traditional dance to the courage in open dialogue, today was about raising a generation that knows who they are, understands their worth, and refuses to live in fear.

Freedom is not just a memory.
It is a daily fight. A daily choice. A daily voice.

ASAP is that voice
In the community
With the people
For the people.
