Celebrating the End of Another SEF Journey at Impendulo

On 20 August, the Social Employment Fund (SEF) contract came to an end, marking the conclusion of another meaningful chapter at Impendulo Community Development and Youth Empowerment.

The SEF programme continues to change lives by giving young people, especially those fresh out of school, an opportunity to gain their first real work experience. For many of our participants, their first step into the world of work happened through SEF at the Impendulo project. We hope this experience will open doors to permanent employment and future opportunities.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Goedgedacht Trust and Grey Heron for giving us the opportunity to participate in this programme and to contribute our knowledge, experience and passion towards training and developing young people.

At Impendulo, we strongly believe that food security is essential to our community, particularly in an area where seasonal employment can create uncertainty for many families. Through agriculture, skills development and practical training, we continue working towards building a more sustainable future.

A special thank you goes to our SEF 4 participants for your dedication, commitment and availability throughout the programme. It was certainly not always smooth sailing—we had our ups and downs—but we achieved so much together and gained valuable skills and knowledge through our collaboration with Food & Trees for Africa and the Department of Agriculture.

We also want to acknowledge all the behind-the-scenes role players, partners, supporters and friends who continue to strengthen and support the vision of Impendulo Community Development and Youth Empowerment. Your contribution, whether big or small, makes a difference.

A special infrastructure update:
We were grateful to receive a generator from Talisman, which allowed us to pump water from our borehole for three days. However, the cost and availability of petrol remain a challenge. We are therefore looking forward to getting our solar system fully operational, which will make a significant difference to our water security and agricultural production.

To every participant, partner, donor, supporter and team member who has walked this journey with us: THANK YOU!

The SEF contract may have ended, but the journey of learning, growing, farming and creating opportunities continues.

Temporary Playground Closure

Good morning, everyone.

It is with great disappointment that we have had to make the difficult decision to temporarily close the playground.

We have noticed that some children visiting the park are unfortunately damaging the shade-net structure and pulling out young crops that have been planted for our community project.

We understand that children need a safe and enjoyable space to play, and we sincerely apologise for this temporary closure. However, we need to protect the infrastructure and crops while we work on a long-term solution that will allow everyone to enjoy the space responsibly.

We kindly ask parents, guardians and community members for their understanding and support.
Our goal is not to keep children away, but to protect the space so that it can be enjoyed by everyone again.

A BIG MILESTONE FOR IMPENDULO!

Today, we are very happy to report that our three new water storage tanks have finally been installed and positioned close to our shade-net area!

These three tanks add 30,000 litres (30kL) of water storage capacity to the 60kL received from Riebeek Cellars (RC), 20kL from SEF, and 5kL from PPC.

This brings our total water storage capacity to an incredible 115,000 litres (115kL)!

This water reserve will play a crucial role in supporting our agricultural production and ensuring that our crops have a more reliable water supply during the coming days and weeks.

This achievement is a true reflection of teamwork, commitment and the support of our friends, partners and stakeholders. A special thank you to the Department of Agriculture, which played a strategic role in ensuring that everything went smoothly, together with the implementing agency, Casidra.

We are now looking forward to Food & Trees for Africa assisting us with filling the tanks. It may take approximately two to three days to fill all the tanks, but we are excited to see this important part of our water infrastructure coming together!

Impendulo Community Development and Youth Empowerment NPO was recently visited by a team of solar energy experts to discuss our growing infrastructure needs, including the design and development of a functional storage and office solution for our organisation.

The team was led by Mike Gregor and warmly welcomed by Lucky Maneli.

We appreciate the time, expertise and commitment shown towards understanding our needs and exploring practical solutions that can support the continued growth and sustainability of Impendulo.

We look forward to working together as we continue building a stronger future for our community and empowering our youth. 🌱☀️🤝

Today marks the end of a four-week training workshop for Impendulo SEF participants at the POP Centre.

We are proud to have successfully completed the "My Money and Me – Fit for Life, Fit for Work" training programme. I am especially proud of myself and Serohonie for reaching this milestone. Our graduation ceremony is still to come, and we are looking forward to celebrating this achievement.

We are also excited that Essimaralda has been selected to attend further training at Goedgedacht. Congratulations on this wonderful opportunity!

Exciting Developments at Impendulo Farm! 🌱

The implementing agency, Casidra, under the Department of Agriculture, visited Impendulo Farm today and delivered a new batch of seedlings that will be planted early tomorrow morning.

This delivery will significantly boost our production plans, and we are pleased to share that soil preparation was completed two days ago, ensuring that everything is ready for planting.

These crops are intended for our early summer harvest, and we are hopeful that this will be a major step forward for the project and a true game changer for our farming operations.

A special word of appreciation goes to Dr. Mathobela and Katlego for their dedication, commitment, and continuous support in helping us grow and achieve our goals.

Together, we are building a sustainable future through agriculture, food security, and community development.

Today, Impendulo Community Development and Youth Empowerment is reaching new heights as we continue making progress with the relocation of our storage containers and the construction of our solar panel structure.

We are excited to see everything coming together. The two water tanks donated by RC have been positioned and will play an important role in our rainwater harvesting system, helping us improve water security for the project.

Roofing work will continue soon, with all the necessary materials already on site. Our solar panels are also safely stored and ready for installation as we move closer to completing this important development.

*From our soil to their tables! 🌿*
Yesterday we hosted SSP members at our farmers’ meeting here at Impendulo Community Development & Youth Empowerment.

They were blown away by how beautiful our land looks and couldn’t stop smiling as they picked up fresh spinach + beetroot straight from our harvest. Every box was sold and every face left happy.

The best part? They loved the farm so much they’re already planning to come back. That’s the power of partnership + hard work from our youth team.

Growing food. Growing futures. Growing community. 💚
