The Employment First Civil Society Organization (EFCSO) notes with severe concern the latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) released today by Statistics South Africa, confirming that the official unemployment rate has escalated to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026—an increase of 0.9 percentage points from 32.7% in Q1.
​With 8.5 million South Africans officially out of work and the expanded unemployment rate climbing to 43.8%, these metrics are not mere numbers on a page; they represent millions of households facing systemic deprivation and economic exclusion.

National Treasury is drawing a line in the sand: prove your disciplinary boards are functional, or lose your share of the R13.5 billion allocation.
​As an independent watchdog, our position is clear: the collapse of Municipal Public Accounts Committees (MPACs) directly caused the economic collapse of our communities. When officials rig tenders and inflate contracts, they destroy the local sub-contracting ecosystems that sustain small businesses and entry-level workers.
​We demand that these disciplinary hearings are open to public scrutiny. We want the names, the numbers, and the contracts exposed. Consequence management cannot happen behind closed doors while our people remain unemployed.
