Ahmed Kathrada Foundation

Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Promoting the values of non-racialism, justice, and human rights.

Inspired by the life and legacy of Ahmed Kathrada, a stalwart of the anti-apartheid struggle, we aim to build an inclusive society that honors the ideals for which he lived. The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation will:

Promote the values, rights and principles enshrined in the Freedom Charter and the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa;

Collect, record, promote and display, through historical ar

tefacts and contemporary material, Kathrada's role in South Africa's liberation struggle and its relation to the role of other individuals, groups and movements both nationally and internationally;

Establish a Research and Documentation centre that will provide selective historical and contemporary documentation and archival material on liberation history in South Africa and make this available for academic and scholarly research;

Organize seminars, lectures, debates and discussions and undertake research on issues which promote a non-racial, non-sexist and democratic South Africa;

Identify and support projects and programmes that will deepen non racialism and create an equitable society;

Build and maintain a centre that will carry out all of the activities and programmes of the Foundation. While Ahmed Kathrada's activities were substantially connected with the Indian Congress, in practice his activities extended well beyond the Indian Community, ranging from the Young Communist League to Umkhonto we Sizwe amongst others. The foundation will therefore strive to include basic data and be a reference point for information on other individuals and liberation organizations.

Today in history | From our 2026 Racial Justice Calendar

On this day in 1960, independent African states meeting in Addis Ababa resolved to impose sanctions against apartheid South Africa.

The resolution called for diplomatic isolation, economic boycotts, and restrictions on trade and transport as peaceful means of pressuring the apartheid government to end its system of racial oppression.

It marked one of the earliest coordinated efforts by African nations to use international solidarity and collective action in defence of human rights and freedom.

Today, as debates continue around the crisis in Palestine, we point to this history as an example of how non-violent measures such as sanctions and boycotts have been used to pursue accountability and justice.

The resolution reminds us that Africa has a long tradition of standing with people facing oppression and advancing human dignity through collective action.

Today in history | From our 2026 calendar, From Resistance to Reconciliation πŸ—“οΈ

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the 1946 Passive Resistance Campaign.

On 13 June 1946, thousands gathered in Durban to oppose the discriminatory "Ghetto Act", which restricted where South Africans of Indian descent could live, work, and own property.

That evening, the first volunteers pitched tents in defiance of the law, knowing they risked arrest.

Among those inspired by the campaign was a young Ahmed Kathrada, who left school during his matric year to join the struggle. It was through this campaign that he would experience prison for the first time, beginning a lifetime dedicated to justice, equality, and non-racialism.

Eighty years later, the campaign reminds us that societies are weakened when people are divided into those who belong and those who do not. Different context, different victims, same dangerous habit of dividing people into "us" and "them."

The courage of those who resisted in 1946 challenges us to build a South Africa rooted in dignity, solidarity, and shared humanity.

Today in history | From our 2026 Racial Justice Calendar

On this day in 1950, the apartheid government voted in favour of the Population Registration Act, a law that classified South Africans into racial groups and determined where they could live, work, learn, and belong.

It was one of the foundations of apartheid's system of division.

Today, as South Africa grapples with rising anti-foreigner sentiments, this history offers an important reminder. Different context, different victims, same dangerous habit of dividing people into "us" and "them."

When we turn on one another, who pays the price?

The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation welcomes the President's commitment to strengthening border management and enforcing labour and immigration laws.

We call on all sectors of society to work together to restore public confidence, strengthen social cohesion, and ensure that migration challenges are addressed through dialogue, accountability, and the rule of law rather than division and scapegoating.

[YOUTH IMPACT] 4,280+ youth club members. 60 youth clubs. 854 young people reached through civic education. 500 young people participating in the ABSA Entrepreneurship Summit.

These numbers represent more than participation. They represent a growing movement of young people choosing leadership, accountability, active citizenship, and community action.

As we work towards expanding to 100 youth clubs by 2029, your support helps us create opportunities for more young people to learn, lead, and ignite change in their communities.

Together, we are building a generation that ignites change.

One day to go! πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦βœ¨

Walking in the dark because there are no streetlights is a failure of the system and the only way to change the system is to understand our collective power.

Tomorrow, the Joburg Crisis Alliance (JCA) invites the community of Ivory Park, Region A, to a critical Community Meeting.

The youth of '26 have a responsibility to honor '76 by stepping up, getting educated, and making their voices heard.

As a non-partisan alliance, the JCA won’t tell you WHO to vote for. Instead, we are here to engage on WHAT you should vote for equipping you with voter education to match your vote with the future you deserve.

Come through, bring your neighbors, and let’s start talking about Elections 2026.

⏳ 2 DAYS TO GO: Democracy is a daily practice, not just an election day routine. ✊🏾

When we met in Parkview last weekend, one message was clear: voter education isn’t just about knowing how to mark a ballot. It’s about knowing how to hold the people on that ballot accountable for infrastructure decay, safety, and basic services after the votes are counted.

Change starts with grassroots education. Join us in Ivory Park this Saturday as we break down the power of local government oversight and look at how we can collectively reclaim our wards. πŸ—³οΈβœ¨
