Nuclear Bombs
Pictures fade with time, a generation not exposed to this kind of impact don't realise the actual threat. But there is enough history pinned down for us to revoke the reality of a nuclear bomb....
You ever sit with the weight of it? The sheer, metallic taste of raw power hanging in the air like ozone after a lightning strike, the low, humming dread of knowing that a handful of nations hold the keys to fire hot enough to delete cities, to poison the wind for generations, to turn midnight into a silent, blinding noon.
It all traces back to that searing August morning in 1945. Over Hiroshima, a single B-29 released "Little Boy," a uranium bomb whose 15-kiloton blast flattened everything within miles in a fraction of a second.
The sky ignited with a heat brighter than the sun; a fireball thousands of degrees hot vaporized people nearest the hypocenter, leaving only shadows etched into stone. Shockwaves pulverized buildings, firestorms consumed the city, and black radioactive rain fell afterward. An estimated 70,000â80,000 (Men, woman and children) perished instantly or within days in Hiroshima;
Three days later, "Fat Man" over Nagasaki added tens of thousands more. Total deaths from the two bombs reached 150,000 â 246,000, mostly civilians, with survivors, the hibakusha, bearing scars, cancers, and trauma for decades. That single, horrific demonstration of nuclear fury ended World War II but seared a permanent lesson into humanityâs psyche: these weapons were not just more powerful bombs, they were civilization-enders.
The images, the suffering, and the fear of escalation with the Soviet Union (which accelerated its own bomb program) gave birth to the nuclear taboo. No nuclear weapon has been used in war since. Yet they also ignited the Cold War arms race, pushing stockpiles into the tens of thousands and forcing the superpowers to confront a terrifying truth.
Picture the world in the shadow of the Cuban Missile Crisis, October 1962. The superpowers stared into the abyss, Soviet ships churning toward Cuba, American destroyers in blockade, Kennedy and Khrushchev with fingers hovering over buttons that could end civilization in hours.
They pulled back. Barely...
And in that trembling silence, a cold realization settled: if we nearly blundered into Armageddon with just two players, a world with 15 or 20 nuclear-armed states would be pure, screaming nightmare.
So Washington and Moscow, enemies everywhere else, found common cause. They helped midwife the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1968. The deal was stark, almost biblical in its finality. If you had tested a nuclear weapon before January 1, 1967, you were grandfathered in as a recognized Nuclear Weapon State: the United States, Russia (then the Soviet Union), Britain, France, and China. Everyone else who signed promised, hand on the treaty: We will not build or acquire these weapons. In return? Access to the peaceful atom energy, medicine, science. And the big five vaguely pledged to eventually walk back their own arsenals.
It was law, yes. But law written by the powerful, frozen in the ice of the Cold War.
India, Pakistan, and Israel never signed. India built its bomb after its border war with China, then Pakistan matched it in the deadly sibling rivalry of the subcontinent.
Israel? It chose the ultimate Schrödingerâs cat strategy, neither confirming nor denying, a quiet, ambiguous shadow arsenal widely estimated at around 90 warheads today, with material for more. Never tested openly. Never admitted. Tolerated.
Then there was apartheid-era South Africa, a pariah state ringed by hostility and Soviet-backed forces on its borders. In the shadows of isolation and the "Total Onslaught" doctrine, Pretoria secretly built its own nuclear deterrent, not a massive arsenal for battlefield dominance, but a sophisticated insurance policy of fear.
Starting in the 1970s, scientists at the Y-Plant (Valindaba, a name meaning "we do not speak about this at all") enriched uranium using a unique aerodynamic process, producing enough highly enriched uranium for gun-type devices eerily reminiscent of Hiroshimaâs Little Boy.
By the early 1980s, Armscor had assembled six operational 10â18 kiloton bombs (with a seventh under construction), compact enough to be delivered by aircraft. They dug deep test shafts at the remote Vastrap site in the Kalahari Desert, preparing for an underground detonation that the world never saw. The strategy was "catalytic deterrence" or nuclear restraint: not to win wars outright, but to signal quietly to the West, especially the United States, that if the regime faced existential collapse against communist proxies, it might "go nuclear" or even demonstrate a device to force American intervention.
The program remained one of the most tightly held secrets; even many cabinet members were in the dark. Yet as apartheid crumbled in the late 1980s, with F.W. de Klerk steering toward negotiations with the ANC and majority rule on the horizon, the calculus shifted. In 1989, de Klerk ordered the entire program shut down. The six bombs and the unfinished seventh were meticulously dismantled, the highly enriched uranium cores safely stored and later down-blended or safeguarded, facilities decommissioned, and thousands of documents destroyed.
South Africa became the first, and still only, nation to independently develop nuclear weapons and then voluntarily, verifiably relinquish them. In 1991 it acceded to the NPT as a non-nuclear state and invited IAEA inspectors to confirm the rollback. The decision was driven by strategy as much as morality: the bombs had become a liability, an obstacle to rejoining the international community in a post-apartheid future.
It was a rare moment when power chose restraint, proving that rollback is possible when the regime itself sees the arsenal as a threat to its own transition.
North Korea signed in 1985, walked away in 2003, and detonated its first device in 2006. Once the mushroom cloud rose and the warheads were real, the worldâs options narrowed to sanctions, isolation, and uneasy deterrence. You can pressure and sabotage before the threshold. After? Retaliation becomes too catastrophic to risk lightly.
And then thereâs Iran...
Iran did sign the NPT. That binds it legally: no weapons, full IAEA inspections to prove the program stays peaceful. It has every right under the treaty to civilian nuclear technology, power plants, isotopes, if it complies. But years of concealment, enrichment to 60% (a hairâs breadth from weapons-grade), restricted access for inspectors, and past activities with clear military dimensions created deep, justified distrust.
The regime speaks of a religious fatwa against such weapons, yet analysts note its flexibility under "expediency" when survival feels at stake. Before the major strikes of June 2025 on Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan, Iran had accumulated hundreds of kilograms of near-weapons-grade material and breakout timelines had collapsed to terrifying speed.
The attacks severely damaged facilities and enrichment capabilities; as of 2026, IAEA access to struck sites remains limited, enrichment appears halted or crippled, and material status (some reportedly "under the rubble") is murky.
Further strikes in early 2026 added pressure, but knowledge and dispersed elements endure.
The difference between Israel and Iran isnât just ink on paper. Itâs strategy and perception of threat. Israelâs undeclared deterrent is seen by Washington and allies as a stabilizing backstop in a region ringed by hostility, a quiet insurance policy that hasnât (yet) sparked a frantic arms race among neighbors.
An Iranian bomb, by contrast, raises the specter of ideology married to ultimate power: proxy wars amplified, explicit existential threats against Israel, and the very real risk that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, or others would race to match it.

South Africaâs story adds another layer: even a developed arsenal can be walked back when the incoming political reality makes it more dangerous than useful.
Power writes the exceptions. Once a state crosses the threshold and can credibly threaten retaliation, the game shifts from "stop them at all costs" to "manage the nightmare." The NPT, born from the ashes of Hiroshima and the near-misses of the Cold War, has slowed proliferation better than many feared in the 1960s (far fewer nuclear states today than projected).
Yet it exposes the regimeâs raw spine: five recognized guardians, a few tolerated outsiders, one remarkable rollback in South Africa, and everyone else told to stay in the civilian lane, while the superpowers (holding the lionâs share of todayâs roughly 12,200 warheads) modernize their own vast arsenals.
This isnât hypocrisy for hypocrisyâs sake. Itâs the grim logic of a world that glimpsed mutual su***de in 1962 (and the horror of 1945) and decided: fewer fingers on fewer triggers is safer.
Yet the underlying tension remains, the taste of fear, the hum of centrifuges (or their ruins), the quiet knowledge that technology and resentment donât respect treaties forever.
