We came together last Friday at the Resource Centre for our AGM to celebrate what we achieved in 2025... our year of “clarity of purpose for intentional action".

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us, and a very special shoutout to our chairman, Rory, who steps down this year after 7 years on our Board.

Saturday marked World Down Syndrome Day (21/3) - a date chosen to represent the triplication of chromosome 21 💙💛 A day to celebrate people with Down Syndrome and to advocate for a more inclusive world.

We’re resharing this video because every child deserves to be seen, valued and included. Thank you Unathi and Thuwe for sharing your story!

Aphiwe at the wheel… let’s go! Our Inclusive Hubs ECD expansion team certainly had an adventure last week while heading to an ECD centre in kwaMbotho. A reminder that we are truly reaching children and practitioners in communities far from resources.

Step 1: Roll, roll, roll! Step 2: Snip, snip, snip!

So many of the children we support love playing with our homemade playdough. It’s a fun sensory experience and lends itself beautifully to imaginative free play.

Here, we’re pretending to be chefs. Rolling “sausages” and cutting them up with scissors. A simple way to practise fine motor skills, strengthen hand muscles, build coordination, and learn to follow instructions.

Playdough recipe:
3 cups flour
1 cup Maizena (corn flour)
1 cup salt
2 tablespoons oil
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 cups boiling water
Dash of food colouring

Mix all the ingredients together, then knead until smooth and soft.
(Optional: And a little vanilla essence for a nice smell!)

Let’s play “Simon Says”!

Children cross the midline by touching their nose with one hand and the opposite ear, then switch sides. This “red flag” screening activity helps our team assess coordination, brain integration, and the ability to follow instructions. It can also be adjusted for different age groups and levels of difficulty.

Fun activities like this one give us a sense of how children are developing and help guide our support during catch-up interventions.

Today our team put on their walking shoes and headed out into the hills for an Inclusion Programme home visit. Distance doesn’t stop us. The weather doesn’t stop us. Grass and gravel roads don’t stop us.

Thoughts on ...

Epilepsy is NOT witchcraft. Seizures happen when there is a sudden, abnormal electrical activity in the brain. This can affect a person’s awareness, movements or sensations. Awareness and understanding can make a real difference in inclusion, safety and education.

This is a wonderful example of transferring skills to a guardian during a home visit. In these snaps, Thenji is practicing hand-over-hand with the guardian of a child we support through our Inclusion Programme. They are exploring a “touchy-feely” book together, helping the child engage with learning using gentle touch and guidance.

(Why it works: Hand-over-hand provides the child with sensory input and guided movement in a safe, supportive way. This helps the child understand cause and effect while building confidence and interaction with their caregiver.)

They’re back! 💚 Welcome back to all the children we support through our Respite Play & Learn playgroup at the Resource Centre. It was wonderful to see you today!

👉 Respite Play & Learn is a therapy-led playgroup for older children with severe to profound disabilities who are excluded from educational facilities. It provides an opportunity for children to play and connect, while offering their caregivers time for rest and respite.
