R2E2 We Represent Producers, Manufacturers And Importers In The WEEE And Lighting Sector Under EPR

05/06/2026

Today, as the nation reflects on World Environment Day, we look at how policy meets action.

While the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) outlines the legislative roadmap for South Africa, R2E2 is on the ground engineering the technical solutions.

We don't see "trash", we see Urban Ore. Through precise Urban Mining, we are:

* Mining the City: Recovering gold, silver, and copper directly from obsolete tech, saving our landscapes from traditional mining scars.

* Protecting Ecosystems: Safely diverting hazardous e-waste and vapes from local landfills to stop heavy metals from leaching into our groundwater.

* Empowering People: Building an inclusive green economy that brings professional dignity and growth to local reclaimers.

Let's stop trashing the treasure and keep engineering a sustainable tomorrow.

Every piece of discarded technology holds a hidden story. What looks like a box of cluttered waste is actually a vital source of valuable materials including silver, palladium, copper, and gold, just waiting to be reclaimed.

When we recycle electronic waste responsibly, we choose to look at our resources differently. We practice Urban Mining.

Choosing to recycle instead of throwing away old tech means you are directly:

* Reducing Environmental Impact: Recycling minimizes the high environmental cost and energy required to mine raw, virgin materials from scratch.

* Protecting Our Soil and Water: Keeping toxic heavy metals safely out of South African landfills and preserving our beautiful landscapes.

* Building a Sustainable Tomorrow: Diverting e-waste from landfills and turning yesterday’s technology into future industrial resources.

Let us stop trashing the treasure and start engineering sustainable ecosystems, together!

Yesterday, the continent celebrated Africa Day, reflecting on our shared history, our diverse cultures, and our incredible potential. At R2E2, we believe that celebrating Africa means protecting her land and empowering her people every single day.

Look closely at our continent. What some might look at and dismiss as obsolete tech, we see as a treasure trove of Urban Ore. Deep within our discarded electronics lie valuable, critical resources like gold, silver, copper, and palladium.

Traditionally, the world has extracted wealth out of Africa's ground. Through the precision of Urban Mining, R2E2 is changing the narrative:

* Harvesting from the City, Not the Earth: By recovering precious metals from existing tech, we save our mountains, soil, and wildlands from traditional mining scars.

^ Protecting Our Natural Capital: Keeping toxic electronic waste safely out of South African landfills prevents heavy metals from poisoning our precious groundwater ecosystems.

* Building an Inclusive Value Chain: Engineering a localized green frontier that provides dignity, professional growth, and opportunity for local reclaimers.

True continental independence relies on how responsibly we manage our resources today to build a self-sustaining tomorrow. Let’s stop trashing the treasure and start engineering a sustainable future for Africa, together!

Strategic milestones in action. We are incredibly honoured to participate in the Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Bernice Swarts’ E-waste Recycling Imbizo and Pilot Project Launch.

This massive day of community action is a major step forward for regional waste management. At R2E2, we believe that building a sustainable tomorrow means looking past "trash" and seeing the true value in Urban Ore.

Your old electronics, from broken laptops to tangled cables, are actually hidden gold mines containing precious materials like silver, palladium, copper, and gold. Through the precision of Urban Mining, these can be safely recovered and reborn into future industrial resources instead of poisoning our landscape.

Why This Launch Matters:

* Protecting Our Soil and Water: By keeping electronic waste out of South African landfills, we prevent toxic heavy metals from leaching into our groundwater ecosystems.

* Building an Inclusive Value Chain: Supporting localised green economies that provide dignity, professional growth, and opportunity for our communities.

*Engineering a Sustainable Tomorrow: Diverting e-waste from landfills and proving that solving South Africa’s environmental challenges requires this exact high-level collaboration.

Let us stop trashing the treasure and start engineering sustainable ecosystems together.

What an incredible day at the Rotary Stadium in Ngangelizwe. Yesterday, we hosted the E-waste Recycling Pilot Project Launch and Imbizo, and the community support was absolutely phenomenal. From households to local schools, Mthatha showed up in numbers to responsibly dispose of their electronic waste and got paid R4.50 per kg for doing their part.

A massive highlight of the day was the amazing energy from the learners and staff of Ngangelizwe Senior Secondary School (holding their banner high).

We were deeply honoured to have the Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms. Bernice Swarts, lead the proceedings and champion the initiative. A huge shoutout to our friends from EWASA and Inca Scrap Metals amongst all our waste management partners who worked tirelessly on the ground to make this pilot launch a massive success.

Massive volumes of e-waste were collected and successfully diverted from landfills.

The numbers don't lie, but they are definitely shocking.

While old technology and electronic waste take up a tiny fraction of our landfills, their toxic footprint tells a completely different story. When left to sit in the ground, heavy metals like lead and mercury escape, threatening our precious South African soil and groundwater ecosystems.

At R2E2, we refuse to let our old tech become a toxic legacy. We choose to see past the "trash" and look at Urban Ore.

Your old electronics are hidden gold mines. Through the precision of Urban Mining, we can safely recover valuable materials, like gold, silver, palladium, and copper, ensuring they are reborn into future industrial resources instead of poisoning our landscape.

Why choosing to recycle matters:

• Protecting Our Ecosystems: Keeping dangerous toxins safely out of local landfills and preserving South Africa's beautiful natural capital.

• Conserving Massive Energy: Recycling just 1 million laptops saves enough energy to power over 3,500 homes for an entire year.

• Building Social Inclusion: Supporting a fair value chain that provides dignity, professional growth, and green jobs for local reclaimers.

We don't just talk about change, we deliver it on the ground!

While the strategic discussions were taking place inside the Civic Centre last Wednesday, our team was outside taking action. In proud partnership with the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO), we were out in full force collecting electronic waste from the Msukaligwa community.

The response was incredible! Every old laptop, tangled cable, and broken device brought to us on the day represents a massive win for our environment. Instead of allowing these items to leak toxic heavy metals into local landfills, our joint efforts ensured they were safely diverted and recovered through the precision of Urban Mining.

We are especially proud to have stood shoulder-to-shoulder with ARO for this drive. Together, we are actively building an inclusive waste value chain that recognizes, empowers, and provides true dignity to the local reclaimers who form the absolute backbone of South Africa's recycling industry.

Thank you to every member of the Msukaligwa community who cleaned out their cupboards and brought their old tech out to meet us. Together, we are cleaning up our spaces, one device at a time!

Reflecting on a massive milestone for regional waste management!

Last week, the R2E2 team was honoured to stand alongside the Msukaligwa Municipality for the official launch of the Multistakeholder Forum on Waste Recycling at the Ermelo Civic Centre.

At R2E2, we firmly believe that solving South Africa’s complex electronic waste challenges requires this exact level of high-level collaboration between government, industry, and the community. Listening to the insights shared by various leadership speakers inside the hall reinforced a powerful truth: engineering a sustainable tomorrow is a collective mission.

This newly launched forum represents a massive step forward in our ongoing commitment to "Pushing Systems" and building a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Mpumalanga.

A huge thank you to the municipality and all the stakeholders who came together to add their voice and expertise to this critical transition.
