The Rachel Swart Fund Registered NPO based in Kuislriver. Rachel grew into a vivacious young woman of indomitable spirit, who was determined to live life to the full.

In January 1960 Sir John Ellerman, a British philanthropist, and Piet Beukes, a newspaper editor, officially registered The Rachel Swart Fund as a welfare organisation, after years of helping individuals with physical disabilities personally on an informal basis. They named the Fund in honour of their friend, Rachel Swart (née Cloete), who was born in Bredasdorp in 1923, without any arms or legs. By the time she was in her twenties, Rachel was married, ran her own home and had a baby son. She caught the attention of Piet Beukes, the editor of an Afrikaans weekly newspaper which focused on human interest stories. He wrote an article about her which deeply touched Sir John Ellerman. The next day, Beukes received a telephone call from Sir John, wanting to know how he could help Rachel. So began a friendship between the three that lasted until 1955, when Rachel died unexpectedly shortly after the birth of her second child, a daughter.

Dear Sweethearts Family,

It is with heavy hearts that we recently received the news of Mary Honeybun’s passing, a true trailblazer and the driving force behind Bread Tags for Wheelchairs. Mary’s daughter, Jane, shared a beautiful message:

"𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘴𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘔𝘶𝘮𝘮𝘺𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘰𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘥 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘺𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘯. Mary’s work and spirit inspired all of us. From humble beginnings, she created something that brought mobility, joy, and community to so many. She was both the heart and inspiration to the start of and our sister organisation Bread tags for Wheelchairs

Our founder, Leigh, shared these touching words about Mary:

"𝘔𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘵. 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴. Mary’s legacy lives on in our work, in every wheelchair given, and in the lives touched by her vision. Rest peacefully, Mary—you’ll always be our guiding star.⭐️

Hi there,

The Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon 2023 is the perfect opportunity to encourage your participating supporters out there to fundraise on your behalf. They don’t need a charity entry to do so — any runner can help make a difference. The event is just over a month away so reach out to your community soon!
The world's most beautiful marathon

The Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon event organizers are challenging all runners this year to help them reach the R1 million mark raised for charity. You could be amongst the charities to benefit.
How to get your supporters fundraising
Here are ways you can inspire your supporters to start their personal fundraising project for you as part of their Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon participation:
• Share the official link on social media and in your next newsletter. Encourage your running fans to select their preferred event from the page, then click on Start fundraising to get started.
• Help them tell the story: what change will a fundraising runner bring about if they raise R5000 for you, for example?
• Add an album of beautiful images and logos on your page for fundraisers to download and add to their projects
