As you probably know, the Department of Social Development Gauteng (DSD) is the primary funder of our Child and Youth Care Centers. However, the government subsidy we receive from DSD only covers a third of the actual cost of care for a child when taking into account the cost of energy (electricity), fuel, food, and HR. For instance, none of the salaries of our 25 Child and Youth Care Workers, who are the moms and dads to the children, are subsidised by DSD. Mogale City charges us the most expensive electricity rates possible. We need your help to care for the kids. Food, fuel, finances – we need your help. Please reach out to Antoinette, our commander in chief (🫣), via WhatsApp on 082 303 3258 and help us change the lives of the Bethany House and Ikusasa kids.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our colleague, Sisonke Modise, who passed away this morning.

Sisonke served as an Auxiliary Social Worker within the Victim Empowerment Program of Bethany House Trust, where she provided compassionate psycho-social support to learners who had experienced trauma and hardship. Through her kindness, dedication, and gentle spirit, she touched the lives of many vulnerable children and families.

Sisonke was a valued member of our team, and her passing leaves a deep void within our organisation and amongst all who had the privilege of working alongside her.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and all those affected by this loss. May we honour her memory by continuing the important work of caring for and uplifting those in need.

We are comforted by the scripture which was Sisonke’s WA status - Isaiah 43:2.

UNkulunkulu wahamba nawe kwaze kwaba sekugcineni Sisonke! Hamba kahle.

Nicarela focuses on education, skills, and resources that create lasting positive change. Bethany House Trust focuses on social welfare services for vulnerable people groups, primarily children. In 2025, we collaborated to ensure the professional development of eight of our Child and Youth Care professionals. These ladies graduated last week with flying colours. Proof that partnerships pay off! Thank you, Liesl Jonkheid from Nicarela, for driving the process. And a huge shoutout to the entire Nicarela team for believing in Bethany House Trust. If you or your company would like to explore possible corporate social investments that will help make South Africa a better place for us all to live and work in, contact Bethany House Trust's Chief Operations Officer, Antoinette Jonker, on WA 082 303 3258 or email her at [email protected]. Toolbox, the sustainable livelihood and job creation initiative of Bethany House Trust, will henceforth operate independently from the Trust. This is part of a strategic organisational realignment aimed at strengthening Bethany House Trust’s core focus on children and families.

The Trust acknowledges the important contribution that Toolbox have made in the fight against poverty and unemployment and wishes them every success in their future endeavours.

The Academic Institute of Excellence (AIE) in Midrand is proudly acknowledged for its outstanding generosity and unwavering commitment to education and social upliftment. By fully funding two bursaries for Bethany House matriculants from 2025, AIE has created truly life-changing opportunities for young people to pursue their academic aspirations and build a brighter, more secure future. This significant investment reflects a deep-seated belief in the power of education to transform lives and break cycles of disadvantage. The bursaries were formally handed over today by Leon Smalberger, CEO of AIE. This gesture goes beyond financial assistance; it is a powerful affirmation of confidence in the potential, resilience, and promise of Bethany House learners. Bethany House extends its heartfelt gratitude to AIE and its leadership for this generous and compassionate partnership.
