🐛 WORMS IN DOGS PART 4: "But I Already Dewormed My Dog"

One of the most common things veterinarians hear is- "But I already gave a deworming tablet." Deworming is important, but there are several reasons worms may still be present:

🔹 The product may not treat all worm species.
🔹 The dog may have been reinfected after treatment.
🔹 The dosage may have been incorrect.
🔹 The infestation may have been severe enough to require repeat treatment.
🔹 Fleas may still be present, allowing tapeworms to return.

Deworming isn't a once off solution. It should form part of a complete parasite prevention plan that includes regular treatments, flea control, hygiene, and veterinary guidance.

🐛 WORMS IN DOGS PART 3: Signs and Symptoms

Not all dogs with worms show obvious signs. Some common symptoms include:
⚠️ Weight loss
⚠️ Poor coat condition
⚠️ Pot bellied appearance
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Diarrhea
⚠️ Scooting on the ground
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Low energy levels
⚠️ Pale gums

In severe cases, you may see worms in the stool or vomit, but many infestations remain hidden. Puppies are particularly at risk because worms can rob their growing bodies of essential nutrients.

If you notice any of these signs, don't ignore them. Early treatment is often simple, while advanced infestations can become life threatening.

🐛 WORMS IN DOGS PART 2: How Do Dogs Get Worms?

Many people assume dogs only get worms from eating something dirty. The reality is much more complicated.

Dogs can become infected by:
✔️ Sniffing or licking contaminated soil
✔️ Eating infected f***s
✔️ Hunting rodents or wildlife
✔️ Flea infestations (a common source of tapeworms)
✔️ Drinking contaminated water
✔️ Their mother during pregnancy or nursing

Even dogs that live mostly indoors can get worms. This is why simply treating worms once is often not enough. If the source of infection remains, your dog can become infected again shortly afterwards.

One of the hardest lessons we learn as pet owners is that tomorrow is never promised.

This morning your dog could be running through the garden, chasing a ball, stealing your spot on the couch, or greeting you with that tail that never seems to stop wagging.

By this afternoon, everything could be different. A sudden illness. An accident. A diagnosis you never saw coming. A goodbye you weren't prepared for.

We often live as though there will always be another walk, another cuddle, another photo, another tomorrow. But life has a way of reminding us just how fragile and precious time really is.

The little things we sometimes overlook, the muddy paw prints, the nose nudging your hand, the sound of them snoring beside you, the excitement they show when you walk through the door, those are the moments that become priceless memories.

Our dogs don't care how much money we have, how busy we are, or what kind of day we've had. They simply love us with every piece of their hearts and ask for so little in return.

So be present. Put down your phone. Spend the extra few minutes with them. Take the photo. Give the treat. Go for the walk. Tell them you love them. Because one day, you'll wish for just one more ordinary moment.

Life can change in the blink of an eye. Don't wait until it's too late to appreciate the soul who thinks you are the greatest thing in their world.

🐛 WORMS IN DOGS PART 1: More Common Than You Think

Many owners believe that if they can't see worms, their dog doesn't have them. Unfortunately, that's not true.

In South Africa, some of the most common worms found in dogs include:
🔹 Roundworms
🔹 Hookworms
🔹 Whipworms
🔹 Tapeworms

These parasites live inside your dog's body and steal nutrients meant for your pet. Some feed on food in the intestines, while others feed on blood.

Puppies are especially vulnerable and can become infected before they are even born or through their mother's milk.

A dog can look healthy and still have a worm infestation. That's why regular deworming and veterinary check ups are so important.

Tomorrow we'll look at how dogs become infected and why some dogs keep getting worms despite being treated.

Just imagine if every single one of our followers donated R20 or R50 per month. It doesn't sound like much. In fact, it's easy to think such a small amount couldn't possibly make a difference.

But when hundreds or thousands of people come together, those small donations become something incredible.

They become food in empty bowls. They become vaccinations and deworming treatments. They become warm bedding during the cold winter months. They become vet care for sick and injured animals. They become a second chance for dogs and cats who have nowhere else to go.

Every animal that arrives at our gates needs something. Some need medical care. Some need rehabilitation. Some simply need a safe place to sleep and a full belly. Every one of them relies on the kindness of people who care.

The animals currently in our care need support today, but there are also animals out there right now whose lives may depend on the help we can provide tomorrow.

Just imagine the impact we could make if every follower contributed a small amount each month.
