We had the incredible privilege of spending time with learners & parents at Johan Slabbert exploring what the future holds and how the world of work is evolving to be more inclusive.

Our workshop focused on the idea that ‘work’ is more than just a job - it’s about doing something helpful for others while gaining the dignity of earning a living from your own efforts.

Here’s to more conversations with the next generation of workers, business men and women and economic participants about reimagining the world of work to focus ‘jobs’ being a means of creating and adding value your community, your country and the world at large.

So you/ your child passed with a 'bachelor' but do not qualify for any university qualification... 😅

While most may view this a failure, there ARE OTHER OPTIONS! Such as:

✅ 1. TVET Colleges. Contrary to popular belief, these colleges are NOT inferior. This option offers practical job skills for trades which often means shorter courses and quicker entry to the workforce.

✅ 2. Extended programmes: if you/ your child is set on going to university, check whether the university has the option to study for an extra year as a bridging course to the qualification of interest;

✅ 3. Upgrading your results. Look out for the Second Chance matric programme which details the process and application deadlines to rewrite specific matric subjects.

✅ 4. Universities of Technology. Entry level diplomas or higher certificates normally require a lower APS score than university undergrad degrees. Do your research by checking the prospectus for comparable qualifications and "late application" extensions.

What other options have we missed❓

A lot of matriculants & parents/guardians are not aware that a ‘bachelor pass’ does not guarantee a place at university.

Universities use the more competitive APS to decide who gets a place for a qualification that’s applied for.

Daily Maverick published an informative article reporting that “ a matric Bachelor’s pass reflects a minimum threshold/eligibility equivalent to 23 APS points while most university programs require a minimum APS of about 28 in select degrees.”

With limited spaces available for study, faculties tend to use ranking systems prioritising applicants with stronger academic results which means that a learner with a ‘Bachelor’ pass or 23 APS points is less likely to be admitted for a university qualification. Not because the learner failed but because learners are competing against the standard and against each other for a spot.
