Media statement: Allegation of sexual exploitation by local councilor in r**e assistance case
The South African Learners Command in the North West is deeply concerned by an allegation that a young woman, who sought assistance in relation to a reported r**e, was subsequently asked to provide sexual favours by a local councillor in the City of Matlosana who had offered help.
We condemn in the strongest terms any form of sexual exploitation, abuse of power, or intimidation. All survivors have the right to confidential, respectful, and safe assistance when seeking justice and support. Allegations of this nature are taken extremely seriously.
We pledge our unwavering support to the victim and stand in solidarity with all survivors of gender-based violence. The scourge of GBV in our society must end, and it starts with holding perpetrators accountable.
The government has failed to adequately protect women and children, and it's time for action. We demand justice for the victim and all survivors.
We call for an immediate, transparent investigation by the South African Police Service and call for the immediate suspension of the councilor from official duties pending the outcome of the investigation. We urge all citizens to support the investigation and ensure that justice is served.
Our priority is the safety, dignity and wellβbeing of the survivor. We reaffirm our commitment to protecting survivors, holding those in positions of power accountable, and ensuring safe, ethical support for all members of our community.
