Media statement: Allegation of sexual exploitation by local councilor in r**e assistance case

The South African Learners Command in the North West is deeply concerned by an allegation that a young woman, who sought assistance in relation to a reported r**e, was subsequently asked to provide sexual favours by a local councillor in the City of Matlosana who had offered help.

We condemn in the strongest terms any form of sexual exploitation, abuse of power, or intimidation. All survivors have the right to confidential, respectful, and safe assistance when seeking justice and support. Allegations of this nature are taken extremely seriously.

We pledge our unwavering support to the victim and stand in solidarity with all survivors of gender-based violence. The scourge of GBV in our society must end, and it starts with holding perpetrators accountable.

The government has failed to adequately protect women and children, and it's time for action. We demand justice for the victim and all survivors.

We call for an immediate, transparent investigation by the South African Police Service and call for the immediate suspension of the councilor from official duties pending the outcome of the investigation. We urge all citizens to support the investigation and ensure that justice is served.

Our priority is the safety, dignity and well‑being of the survivor. We reaffirm our commitment to protecting survivors, holding those in positions of power accountable, and ensuring safe, ethical support for all members of our community.

We plea with anyone who still has unreturned textbooks to please return them to their respective schools. Let's work together to ensure our learners have the resources they need to succeed! πŸ“š

parents
Let us teach our children the value of humility. It’s not about how fancy or expensive their book are, but about the discipline and care they show for their learning materials. A simple act like covering a textbook demonstrates responsibility and respect for what they have.

Small lessons in humility can go a long way in shaping their character for the future. Teach them that true success isn’t about impressing others with material things but about the effort and values they carry in their hearts. Let’s remind them that education is the greatest equalizer, and how they treat their tools of learning reflects their attitude toward life itself.

Together, we can raise a generation that values hard work, humility, and self-respect above all else. It starts with small actions and consistent guidance from us as parents and teachers. Let’s work hand in hand to nurture responsible, respectful, and humble learners.

South African Learners' Command
18 January 2026.

We'd like to report that our recent book collection drive was a huge success! 16'th January we've managed to give back
>60 textbooks to Mphe-Bana 1, >8 to Kgalagatsane,
>4 to Moitshoki Mofenyi. We are to give back remaining retrieved textbooks in days to come,
>26 to Mphe-Bana 2
=16 to Mphe-Bana 1
>3 to koster intermediate
>8 to Rebone Lesedi

We're grateful to all parents and learners who participated. For those who didn't return textbooks, we hope you'll take this opportunity to return them to your school. And for those who did return books, thank you.

Out of 5 schools in Reagile, our book collection drive has revealed that Mphe-Bana Secondary School, which accommodates learners from 3 primary schools, has a history of overcrowding and shortages of furniture, to avoid history repeating itself, let's all make it fashionable to take care of what we have, saving one book... saves a future . According to the books collected, statistically, Mphe-Bana leads all 4 schools, resulting in the school experiencing shortages of textbooks. This leads to learners having to share books, making learning difficult.

There are many reasons why learners don't return textbooks to schools, but we've had a shocking experience: learners can keep textbooks for almost a decade without destroying them. The question is, why aren't they returning them? This affects not only learners but the entire community.

Not returning textbooks can lead to:
- Increased costs for schools to replace lost books
- Reduced resources for future learners
- Negative impact on learning outcomes due to inadequate materials
- Increased burden on teachers

The school community must come up with strategies to ensure that:
- Learners who drop out of school return textbooks
- Matric learners return textbooks before the end of their final examinations
-Learners are educated about the importance of textbooks and how to sustain them for future generations

South African Learners' Command (SALC) statement following withholding of learners reports due to unsettled fees and unreturned textbooks.

We, the representatives of the learners, would like to start by extending our gratitude to all parents who have fulfilled their financial obligations to our schools in Koster. Your commitment to your children's education is truly commendable, and we're proud to have your support.

However, we also want to remind those who haven't paid that it's time to take responsibility. The money paid to schools is used for the benefit of all learners, and it's unfair to those who have paid their dues. We urge you to attend school meetings to stay informed about agreements and decisions made regarding school finances.

As your representatives, we advocate for your rights and welfare, and we expect the same level of commitment from you. It's disheartening to see support only when it's convenient, but we need your backing every step of the way. We're all invested in building a brighter future for our learners, and it starts with working together.

Let's join hands to create a conducive learning environment. We call on all parents to support us, not just when it's convenient, but every time. Together, we can achieve greatness. Amandla!"

Issued by the South African Learners command.
