* Sunbirds: Youโ€™ll often see White-bellied, Collared, and Scarlet-chested Sunbirds around the savanna and grasslands. Theyโ€™re the main pollinators for those bright, tube-shaped flowers. Greater blue- eared starlings and Dark-capped bulbuls, in winter, one often sees both these species with yellow/orange faces when aloes are flowering.

* Long-proboscid (Long-tongued) Flies: Prevalent in grassy and mountainous regions, they have co-evolved to pollinate long-tubed flora.
* Monkey and Blister Beetles: Ancient and somewhat "messy" pollinators, they are frequently found tumbling around inside open indigenous flowers and daisies.
* Hawkmoths & Butterflies: Moths are critical nocturnal pollinators for night-scented, pale flowers, while butterflies (such as the African Monarch and Citrus Swallowtail) pollinate brightly coloured, open blossoms.

* In the rocky, savanna-woodland borders of the escarpment and bushveld, certain small mammals (like bats) feed on nectar and inadvertently pollinate specific trees and succulents (such as indigenous Aloes).

While it has been historically used in folk medicine for stomach complaints, all parts of the plant are poisonous to humans and livestock.

Leaves: Deep purple or bronze when young, maturing to bright green. They are usually three-lobed and sticky to the touch.
Flowers: Small, vibrant red flowers with yellow centres that appear in clusters.
Fruit: Produces small, cherry-sized seed pods that explode to disperse seeds.

Danger: The plant contains highly toxic diterpenoid esters, with the seeds holding the highest concentration. Ingestion can cause severe vomiting, abdominal pain (hence the name), and is potentially fatal to animals and humans.
Invasiveness: It spreads aggressively, creating dense thickets that choke out productive land, reduce biodiversity, and degrade riverbanks.

Germination: Fresh seeds soaked in warm water germinate within 2 to 4 weeks in spring.
Early Growth: Seedlings sprout rapidly and begin to form a thickened hypocotyl (the stem base) almost immediately. Seedlings generally reach a plantable size within 2 to 3 months,

Caudex Development: In its first few years, the plant develops a swollen, bottle-shaped grey-green trunk called a caudex, which stores water and nutrients and helps it withstand drought.
Foliage: It produces large, leathery, 3- to 5-lobed leaves at the top of the stem.

Blooms: The plant blooms repeatedly throughout the year, featuring dense clusters of tiny, star-shaped coral-red or orange-red flowers.
Pollination: The flower clusters contain both male and female flowers and rely on pollinators like butterflies to cross-pollinate.
Fruit Formation: Fertilized female flowers develop into small, green 3-lobed capsules that eventually turn blackish-brown when ripe.
Explosive Dispersal: Once fully mature, the dry seed capsules violently "explode," shooting seeds up to 4 meters (13 feet) away to ensure the next generation.

Dormancy: Depending on the climate, the plant typically goes dormant during the drier or colder months of fall and winter. It sheds its leaves to conserve energy, though it may continue to bloom.
Lifespan: It is a slow-growing, long-lived perennial.
โ€ข ๐๐จ๐ญ๐ž: All parts of the Jatropha podagrica plant are highly toxic and should be handled with care.

Our first game count for 2026 is completed. Recruiting 24 volunteers for our game counting HR work is surprisingly easy, thanks to its social and enjoyable nature. The method, which involves conducting counts over three consecutive mornings, is not only fascinating but also provides valuable insights.
The numbers can vary greatly from day to day, with fluctuations of up to 50 animals. We carry out these three-day counts every six months, and the data we gather is vital for helping the Nkomazi Municipality and MTPA manage our animal populations effectively. Itโ€™s important to note that this particular game count was particularly challenging due to the poor condition of our roads and the dense bush, which we believe affected the low results for May 2026.

Six teams of 4 โ€“ scribe (records the numbers), driver, two dedicated spotters โ€“ set out at the same time, to travel the same block of land, in a set route. This prevents double counting. Because these are road counts, they provide a minimum baseline of what is seen; wildlife experts estimate these figures capture about 60-70% of the park's actual population. Our count is adjusted for counting errors using a scientific formula. It must be stressed that counts do NOT give the total number of animals in the park, only the MINIMUM numbers. The counts are used to provide trend information which is used for game and veld management purposes. The Nkomazi Rangers will also use their Mortality Register to adjust the table attached of non-adjusted numbers.
Even after a successful take off in 2025 our veld is still in a critical state. As HR say repeatedly, We work together with the Municipality to find a solution that is least traumatic and disruptive for animals and residents.
Thank you, as always, to HR Paul Dill-Franzen who expertly organises and records the game count and our non-members who volunteer their time to assist HR.
