Sinethemba, SAPS, CPF, law enforcement and neighborhood watch in blue had a street outreach yesterday in town to address the growing problem of children out of school and on the streets. As expected, the kids were in hiding or may have come into town later, but the awareness was done and hopefully ongoing. Should you as a business owner experience some challenge with these kids, please contact me on 0659457749. To this end I also want to make an appeal to the public not to support child begging and child labor. The moment you give them either food or money, you pay a child to stay out of school. These kids spin the story of not having food at home, but they don't tell you that the schools they attend provide meals every day. If you want to help, support Sinethemba through donations in kind, bread, canned meals, veggies, soup ingredients, fruit etc. You can cause a problem by giving them food or money or you can be part of the solution. Contact me on WhatsApp 0659457749.

It is normal today for children not go to school on any particular day. "I don't have school shoes!" or "my clothes are dirty/wet!" We have recently started doing home visit follow-ups with Hornlee Primary grade 1 teachers as part of our school support program. I am making a plea to all our Primary Schools in Hornlee to contact us if they need to do home visit follow-ups in the case of high absenteeism.

Early morning meeting with the Operational Manager of Hornlee Day hospital, Sist Benn to get information on a new intake. The boy is 9 years old, no birth certificate and never been in school. We are now in the process of doing all of this in order for this child to be registered at Home Affairs and possibly at school.

We work very closely with the Stakeholders in Knysna especially SAPS social crime, Sgt Gendy and Const Quine. Last week we did a home visit where a child refuse to go back to school. We were joined by the SAPS team but unfortunately couldn't find the boy. It is sad to see how many children in Hornlee are not in school. Now that we have moved to Hornlee we see daily how children as young as 9 years are out of school and they would even say, "my mummy said it is okay!" We have recently enrolled a 9 year old who has never been in school, no birth certificate! Before we can get him into a school, we must first assist the mother to apply for the birth certificate. Parents, how can we allow this? I recently found out that the drug smugglers use boys aged 12-15 to be their mules here in Hornlee. I wonder who is to blame, ignorant parents, schools for not being able to cope with the behavior of the children and then suspending them, Child Protection Organisations for not responding sooner to the cries of parents, the community for allowing drug smugglers to sell dagga to our children? How is it possible that we can close our eyes when a 9 year old is already smoking dagga and openly brag about it? I have doing this for the past 21 years and I thought things would get better. It's not!

FEEL GOOD STORY:
I want to use this opportunity to welcome our international volunteer from Volunteer International Adventures Stephanie Metcalfe. Already she is making a difference by treating the kids with pancakes or is it flipcakes? The children loved it! Thank you Steph and I hope you will have a memorable time here in Knysna!
