FROM TRAINING SHIP KNYSNA TO SKIPPER OF SKYFALL
_Naiguel Keswarts’ Journey_
For Naiguel Keswarts of Training Ship Knysna, it was the start of a journey that led all the way to the wheelhouse.
He joined the South African Sea Cadets at Training Ship Knysna in 2018 as a cadet. In 2020 he earned promotion to Officer Cadet and did his skippers courses in his time while he was onboard. As an Officer, he served as Catering Officer when the unit ran camps onboard, and within a year stepped up as Divisional Officer of Quarterdeck Division. Those roles taught him responsibility, leadership, and how to look after a team.
After his time as an Officer, Naiguel worked as a junior officer and sailing instructor. That hands-on experience built directly on the seamanship and discipline he first learned at TS Knysna. Today he is a Skipper, with his primary vessel being the _Skyfall_ at Heads Explorer Charter Catamaran. The training that started on parade now guides him every time he takes the helm.
TESTED BY FIRE
In 2023 Naiguel’s training was put to the ultimate test when a yacht caught fire. Because of what he learned at TS Knysna, he knew exactly what to remove and what to put on to control the situation. For his bravery and quick action, he was awarded the Meritorious Medal by Headquarters, the Board of Directors, and Senior Officers of the South African Sea Cadets. It was proof that the Corps doesn’t just teach drills — it teaches you to act when it matters most.
He’s no longer actively involved with the unit, but the lessons still carry through. The discipline, boat handling, and leadership drilled into him as a cadet and officer are the same things that keep passengers safe and operations running smoothly on the lagoon.
LOOKING AHEAD
Naiguel’s goal now is to build as much experience as possible and complete courses that will benefit him in the wider maritime industry. The wheelhouse of _Skyfall_ is just one step. The skills from TS Knysna are the foundation he’s using to go further — into bigger vessels, higher tickets, and broader opportunities at sea.
For the young boys and girls currently on parade at Training Ship Knysna, Naiguel’s story is proof: what you learn in the Corps goes with you. It takes you from standing at attention, to standing at the helm, and beyond.
