Sometimes the most wonderful learning happens when children are simply given the freedom to imagine.

In a recent KILT Eco-Club session, children explored the desert biome through art. The results were delightful: purple camels, pink cacti, bold skies, and endless creativity.

These moments matter because creativity helps children develop confidence, curiosity, and a sense of ownership over their ideas. When children are encouraged to see the world through their own unique lens, they learn that their thoughts, perspectives, and contributions have value.

Across our Eco-Clubs, children are engaging with the environment in meaningful and memorable ways. They are making pledges to care for the Earth, baking and sharing edible versions of our planet, painting pebbles for the gardens they help nurture, and discovering the natural world through hands-on experiences.

Through KILT’s Psycho-social Programme, Eco-Clubs create opportunities for children to connect with nature, express themselves creatively, and build important life skills along the way.

And if that journey includes a few purple camels? We think that’s pretty wonderful too.

From local classrooms in Knysna to provincial competition stages, what an incredible journey to witness.

At KILT’s recent LEGO Robotics & Coding Competition, our children showed determination, teamwork, creativity and resilience as they tackled coding challenges and worked together to problem-solve when things didn’t go to plan.

And now, nine children from Percy Mdala High and Concordia High are heading to the World Robotics Olympiad South Africa (WRO SA) Provincials this August.

Beyond the robots and coding, this is about creating opportunities for our children to grow in confidence and discover what they are capable of.

Our children have a powerful message to share, and you won’t want to miss a single word.

Watch these inspiring innovators, Given Collins-Alie, Sanelisiwe Nalo, and Lwazelihle Nicola as they share their robotics journey and the lessons learned along the way.

A child’s maths journey spans more than a decade.

Years of teachers.
Years of classrooms.
Years of concepts building on each other.

For most of that journey, each teacher has carried their piece of the road alone, but what if every single one of those teachers could finally see the whole road?

When teachers come together, the wheels of belief start to turn, and our kids are

As part of the Healthy Futures South Africa initiative, KILT's Maths Teacher Development Programme and UCT's Schools Development Unit brought together teachers from Grades 4 to 12 for the first time — building a shared understanding of a child's maths journey.

Where it begins.
Where it leads.
How each year hands the baton to the next.

No more guessing what came before.
Teachers, aligned.
Children, supported.

When teachers come together the wheels of belief start to turn, and our kids are
empowered to ultimately reach their journey’s destination.

This is what it looks like when education moves forward together.
KILT is proud to be part of that movement.

🚀 FROM UNUSED TECH TO UNLOCKED POTENTIAL 🚀

What if the device you’re no longer using could open up a whole new world of learning for a child?

KILT’s Digital Drive is building a revolving hub of technology for our e-Learning Programme, giving children in our partner schools access to the digital tools and skills they need to learn, explore, and thrive in today’s world.

Many of the children we work with don’t have access to devices or digital learning spaces. Your donation helps us take technology directly into schools — bridging the digital divide in a way that is practical, accessible, and deeply impactful.

If you have a working tablet, smartphone, or laptop or any other working tech, we would love to give it new purpose.

📍 Drop off your pre-loved but working tech at Knysna Mall (outside Woolworths)
📅 29 May | 9AM – 4PM

Together, we can turn unused tech into opportunity and access into possibility. 💚

What does Nelson Mandela, Harvard, and a shebeen in Pretoria have in common?

One extraordinary person on our board.

At KILT, we believe the people behind the vision matter just as much as the vision itself.

Over the coming weeks, we’d like to introduce you to the individuals on our board. The lived experiences, the values, and the journeys that help shape what we do.

We start with someone who reminds us why we believe in people.

Some people are born into opportunity. Others build it from nothing.

Dr. Thabane Vincent Maphai grew up the son of shebeen owners in Pretoria, in a world that offered little promise of what was to come. Today, he holds a PhD, completed an Advanced Management Programme at Harvard, has spoken at Stanford, and was personally entrusted by Nelson Mandela to lead the Presidential Review Commission — reshaping the structure of a newly democratic South Africa.

He spent decades as a professor, a corporate leader at SAB and BHP Billiton, and a board chair across some of Africa’s most significant institutions. A life built entirely on education, integrity, and an unshakeable belief in human potential.

His own words say it best:

“There is something fulfilling about seeing a student written off, then slowly rising out of the ashes to become an expert.”

He knows that journey. He lived it. And perhaps that is why his connection to KILT feels so meaningful.

“My experience of KILT – A pleasure and privilege to be part of a team of self-less and focused professionals whose passion is education and well-being of our children.”

That’s the kind of heart and wisdom sitting around the KILT table, and we are deeply grateful.

📣TURN PRELOVED TECH INTO REAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES📣

Right now, there are children in our partner schools eager to learn but without access to the digital tools many of us use every day.

KILT is building a revolving hub of technology through our e-Learning Programme, taking devices directly into schools to support learning, confidence, and future readiness.

Your unused tech can become part of that cycle.

If you have working laptops, desktops, tablets, or smartphones no longer in use, we would love to give them new purpose — in the hands of children who need them most.

We’re calling on Knysna businesses, schools, and our wider community to be part of this meaningful shift.

Based in Knysna? We’ll collect from you.

Together, we can bridge the digital divide — one device, one child, one opportunity at a time.

A child in Knysna had a teacher who refused to give up on them.
That teacher had a principal who believed pass rates could beat the national average.
That principal was part of a community that decided education was worth fighting for.

This is how change actually travels.

In classrooms. In people. In a single decision made on an ordinary day that changes the course of a life.

KILT’s 2025 Annual Report is here.

It carries nine years of stories.
Of humble beginnings, growing into national relevance.
Of young trailblazers finding their footing.
Of a movement that was always rooted in one thing:
Every child in Knysna deserves a shot at something extraordinary.

This is what that looks like, documented.
Read it. Share it. Let it stay with you.

What if the book a child chooses today changes everything?

This World Book Day, KILT’s children entered the world of books in ways that felt joyful, hands-on, and unforgettable. From designing colourful bookmarks to exploring book buffets filled with stories waiting to be chosen, reading became an experience, not a task.

And that matters more than many realise.

A child’s relationship with books is often shaped by moments like these. Not by pressure, but by pleasure. Not by being told to read, but by discovering that books can be exciting, comforting, funny, adventurous, and full of possibility.

When children begin to associate reading with joy, everything changes. Confidence grows. Vocabulary expands. Concentration strengthens. Imagination comes alive. A stronger reader often becomes a stronger learner across every subject.

But there is something even deeper at work. Books help children see lives beyond their own circumstances. They show new places, new ideas, and new possibilities for who they can become. Sometimes a story is the first place a child learns to dream bigger.

At KILT, we know literacy development is not built only in formal lessons. It is also built in these meaningful moments that spark lifelong habits. A bookmark made with pride. A book chosen independently. A story shared with laughter.

After overcoming so much, this barrier could have stopped her, but it didn’t!

This is Imivuyo’s story!

A young woman from Knysna faced what felt like an impossible barrier to her dreams of studying further. Despite excelling at school, her bursary application was blocked by an error outside of her control. This discrepancy created barriers to her bursary eligibility, a single incorrect detail in the system that stood between her and a future in higher education.

With her studies at risk of coming to an end, through our Tertiary Launch Programme we were able to assist. Imivuyo received the support she needed to continue her education and hasn’t looked back since.

Today, Imivuyo has successfully graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work, a milestone that once felt like a distant dream. Not only is she building a future for herself and her family, but she’s also giving back to KILT and our children.

“...I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to KILT for the incredible support you have given me throughout my academic journey. You made it possible for me to continue studying when I faced significant financial challenges, and your guidance during the university application process opened doors I once thought were out of reach. Because of your belief in me, I have successfully graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work, a milestone that once felt like a distant dream. Today, I am honored to be part of your work, serving part-time in the Vocational Focus Program, where I now help other learners navigate their own paths to higher education. It is deeply meaningful to give back…and empower the next generation within the Knysna community. Since 2023, I have also had the privilege of mentoring first-year students, sharing knowledge, offering support, and contributing to the growth and strength of our community. Thank you for not only investing in my education, but for shaping my purpose and allowing me to be part of a cycle of impact that continues to uplift others.”

Imivuyo’s journey is a powerful reminder of what happens when determination meets opportunity and why KILT remains committed to walking alongside our youth, every step of the way.
