A great book, full of stories from the field, coming out soon!

A few months ago the new Red Data Book for birds in southern Africa came out, which our Conservation Director Dr Mark Brown contributed too - and today we get to share news of another book coming out - Birds on the Brink, which Mark has also been a contributor too. This awesome book, coming out in September, tells the stories of those working to study and conserve the Red Data Book species we have. mark has four stories in the book, on Karoo Korhaan, Knysna Woodpecker, Mangrove Kingfisher and Neergard's Sunbird.

BirdLife South Africa has a great pre-order special - get yourself a copy here: https://shop.birdlife.org.za/product/birds-on-the-brink/

Important Reminder: Baby Owls Learning to Fly 🦉⚠️

As spotted eagle baby owl season begins, you may come across young owls on the ground. Please understand that this is a normal part of their development - they’re learning to fly. Unless they are in immediate danger (like being near a road, predators, or unsafe environments), they should not be picked up or removed from their natural surroundings.

Intervening unnecessarily can disrupt their growth and separate them from their parents, who are often nearby, keeping a watchful eye. While it may be distressing to see them grounded, it’s important to resist acting based on emotion. Removing baby owls from the wild can do more harm than good.

If you are ever unsure about what to do, please reach out to us for guidance before taking action. Let’s work together to protect these owls and ensure their safety.
