⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE

Severe weather continues, with the rest of the country also facing possible rainfall but guaranteed cold as the cold frontal system begins moving out of the country tomorrow. South Africa faces persistent, disruptive conditions as heavy rainfall threatens high-level flooding, road closures, and mudslides across the Eastern Cape and Western Cape, while a cold advisory brings plunging temperatures, windy conditions, and light snowfall to the high-lying areas of the Northern Cape and Eastern Cape. Most northern provinces remain partly cloudy to cool, while the central and southern interior face intense, cold, and wet conditions. Strong coastal winds and damaging waves are creating perilous navigation conditions along the southern coastline.

Freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and lashing winds will severely impact daily life, so everyone must take immediate precautions. For farmers, the bitter cold and icy snowfall threaten vulnerable livestock and crops, requiring secure indoor shelter and extra feed to prevent loss. Logistics and transport companies must prepare for major supply chain disruptions as flooded roads, submerged bridges, and mudslides block key shipping routes and create treacherous driving conditions. Travelers, tourists, and commuters should avoid non-essential road trips, watch out for fast-moving rivers that can easily sweep vehicles away, and expect sudden cancellations of outdoor tours or flights. Mariners and small vessel operators face dangerous, high-risk sea navigation with waves that can swamp boats, meaning all small watercraft should remain safely in port. For families and people with pets, domestic animals must be brought inside or kept in warm, dry enclosures away from the biting wind to prevent hypothermia.

For the rest of the week, dress in heavy, wind-resistant layers, thick sweaters, waterproof jackets, beanies, and gloves to combat the extreme chill. Because electricity networks often experience strain or outages during severe storms, many households will rely on alternative heating. Never leave open fires, paraffin stoves, gas heaters, or candles unattended, and ensure charcoal braziers are used only in well-ventilated spaces to avoid deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

EASTERN CAPE
Potential for cloudy and cold to very cold conditions with widespread showers and thundershowers, accompanied by strong coastal winds and snowfall over northern high-lying areas.
Orange Level 9: Severe flooding of roads and bridges, life-threatening fast-moving rivers, and major road closures could occur on the South Coast up to East London.
Orange Level 5: Flooding, displaced settlements, mudslides, and danger to life are possible between East London and Morgan Bay.
Yellow Level 2: Localised road flooding might develop in the central, western, and eastern interior.
Yellow Level 2: Disruptive snow leading to icy roads and traffic disruptions is possible in northern high-lying areas.
Yellow Level 2 (Coastal): Damaging waves leading to navigation difficulty and risk to small vessels are possible between Plettenberg Bay and East London.

WESTERN CAPE
Potential for cloudy and cold conditions, becoming very cold in the Central Karoo, with isolated to scattered showers and rain, becoming widespread in the east. Strong coastal winds and light mountain snow expected.
Orange Level 9: Heavy flooding of roads and bridges, life-threatening fast rivers, and major road closures could impact the eastern Garden Route.
Yellow Level 4: Flooding of settlements, roads, and bridges is possible in the eastern parts, excluding extreme south-eastern areas.
Yellow Level 4 (Coastal): Dangerous wind and waves leading to navigation difficulty and risk to small vessels are possible between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay.
Yellow Level 2: Localised road flooding might impact Theewaterskloof and Langeberg.

NORTHERN CAPE
Potential for cloudy, windy, and cold to very cold conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers, and light snowfall over southern high-lying areas.

GAUTENG
Potential for cloudy and cool conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers.

MPUMALANGA
Potential for morning fog over the Lowveld, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers, and warm conditions in the Lowveld.

LIMPOPO
Potential for partly cloudy conditions in the south-west, otherwise fine and cool to warm.

NORTH-WEST PROVINCE
Potential for cloudy, windy, and cold to cool conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers.

FREE STATE
Potential for cloudy, windy, and cold to very cold conditions with scattered showers and thundershowers, isolated in the south-west.

KWAZULU-NATAL
Potential for morning interior fog, otherwise cloudy and cold to cool, with widespread showers and thundershowers, scattered in the north. Warm conditions in the north-east.

A Heartfelt Plea for Your Kind Assistance – Christmas in July

Dear Friends and Valued Community Members,

The Pink Loerie Foundation is reaching out with warm hearts as we prepare for our special Christmas in July celebration.

We are humbly asking for your help with the following:

- Christmas wrapping paper (any designs or colours) that you no longer need and is simply taking up space in your home.
- Mini-matt fabric in green and red – even small pieces will be greatly appreciated.

Every roll of paper and every piece of fabric will help us wrap gifts with care and create beautiful festive items for this special event. What may feel like unused items in your cupboard can become sources of magic and smiles for those who need them most.

If you can contribute any of these materials, or even a small amount, it would mean the world to us and to the families we support. Your generosity will help make this Christmas in July truly memorable.

Please contact us at: [email protected]

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your kindness and willingness to share. Together, we can spread warmth, colour, and Christmas cheer in July.

With sincere gratitude,
The Pink Loerie Foundation Team

Changes are coming. Changes are happening.

From stepping away from toxic environments to building new, meaningful partnerships - this is the natural rhythm of growth and renewal.

We’ve been through it all. We’ve endured more than most will ever know. We showed up when others turned away, and that fire has only made us stronger, wiser, and more determined.

This is our moment.

Be part of the new movement. Be part of the future. But most of all - be part of it.

Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride 2026 Rescheduled to 24–27 September

New Dates Align with Heritage Day | Theme: “Rainbow Heritage: United in Diversity”

Knysna, South Africa – 27 April 2026 – The Pink Loerie Foundation, organisers of the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride, today announced the rescheduling of the 2026 edition (originally planned for 30 April – 3 May) to 24–27 September.

The event, South Africa’s leading LGBTQIA+ arts and cultural celebration, will deliver four days of parades, live performances, art exhibitions, heritage workshops, wellness events, and inclusive tourism experiences in the Knysna area in the Western Cape.

The Pink Loerie Foundation is also thrilled to welcome Mahindra Rise – The Charity Drives and The Blanket Drive, together with Fastways Couriers, as the official and preferred logistics partners.

More exciting collaborations and announcements are set to follow.

These meaningful partnerships will directly support the Foundation’s community safety initiatives, youth education programmes, free public events, and seamless festival logistics – helping us create an even warmer, more accessible celebration for everyone.

New Dates and a Unifying Theme

The decision to reschedule the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride was driven by two factors: the severe saturation of Knysna’s infrastructure during the already jam-packed succession of long weekends at the end of April, and – most significantly – the sharp, ongoing rise in fuel and jet-fuel prices triggered by the volatile geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

These pressures risked compromising accessibility, affordability, and the quality of experience for both local and international visitors.

The new dates better align with South Africa’s national calendar – delivering warmer spring weather, lower travel costs, and a built-in national platform for celebration.

The 2026 Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride theme, “Rainbow Heritage: United in Diversity,” has also been timed to coincide with Heritage Day on 24 September. The theme honours South Africa’s Rainbow Nation legacy – the powerful vision articulated by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu – while explicitly celebrating the full integration of LGBTQIA+ identities into the nation’s extraordinarily rich cultural tapestry.

The theme invites every South African – regardless of background, faith, or orientation – to see themselves reflected in a bigger, bolder, more inclusive story. It transforms Heritage Day from a day of looking to the past into a living, breathing celebration of who we are becoming together.

Knysna Executive Mayor, Thando Matika, welcomes the decision to reschedule the 2026 event: “The rescheduling of the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride to coincide with Heritage Day presents a powerful opportunity to celebrate the true essence of who we are as a nation. Under the theme ‘Rainbow Heritage: United in Diversity,’ this festival not only honours our rich cultural tapestry, but also reaffirms Knysna’s commitment to inclusion, dignity, and unity for all. We are proud to host an event that continues to grow as a platform for expression, acceptance, and economic opportunity, while showcasing our town as a welcoming destination where every individual is seen, valued, and celebrated.”

The Pink Loerie Foundation is actively calling on artists, creators, donors, sponsors, and corporate partners to help shape this landmark edition of the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride.

Why the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride Matters

The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival and Knysna Pride is more than an arts festival – it is a national platform for advocacy, visibility, economic empowerment, and genuine partnership through the Pink Loerie Foundation.

While significant challenges remain – recent studies show that 78% of LGBTQIA+ South Africans still experience discrimination and many face violence or harassment – the community’s resilience and contribution continue to inspire. The Pink Loerie Foundation stands as living proof of that strength.

What began twenty six years ago as a small local tourism initiative has matured into a respected national platform. The Pink Loerie Foundation proudly upholds the groundbreaking 1996 South African Constitution – the first in the world to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation – and turns those constitutional promises into joyful, tangible reality.

“We are not moving the festival; we are elevating it,” says Pink Loerie Foundation Chairperson Georlene Wolmarans. “September gives us the perfect canvas: Heritage Day, warmer spring weather, lower travel costs, and a national moment already dedicated to celebrating who we are. ‘Rainbow Heritage: United in Diversity’ is more than a theme – it is a declaration that every South African, in every colour of the rainbow, belongs. We invite artists, donors, sponsors, and corporates to stand with the Pink Loerie Foundation and help make this the most inclusive, impactful edition yet.”

Painting the Streets of Knysna in Colours of Unity

Through art installations that fuse traditional craft with contemporary q***r expression, music stages that blend maskandi, kwaito, gqom, and drag performance, and the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival Street Parade – now called Knysna Pride – that marches alongside heritage dancers and cultural groups, the festival will literally paint the streets of Knysna in the colours of unity from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 September.

Full programme details, ticket information, accommodation packages, and involvement guidelines will be released in the coming weeks.
