Monday 8 June 2026:
What a beautiful night in Knysna last night. The Scouts were greeted with a stunning rainbow to start the meeting. 🌈 After flag break, there was a short game and a current affairs talk by the Kingfisher Patrol. Did you know that there have been 8 new dinosaur 🦖🦕species discovered so far in 2026? Jasmine then gave a very informative and detailed talk to the troop about the buddy system, well done Jasmine! 👏Thereafter it was back to first aid training with Nightjar. Tonight we focused on 🏥 the 4 h's,🩹 wounds🩺 and bleeding💉 and wrapping broken ankles and lacerations. SDG4 badges were also awarded to, Dominique, Mark, Jasmine, Dante, Aeryn, Arya, Aliya and Trinity as well as water awareness🛟 badges for our TS Penguin, ATS Nightjar and our Kingfisher patrol leaders, Dominique and Mark. Well done everyone. ⚜️

Troop meeting 01/06/2026:
A shortened meeting due to our senior scouts writing exams but this didn't mean we still didn't have a jam packed program. The evening kicked off with our donation of collected books 📚, games, puzzles🎲♟️🧩, stationery ✂️✏️🖍️🖌️and toys to a local preschool in Dam-Se-Bos, Rainbow of Hope early learning centre. Beth and Nomfu (the principal and teacher) joined us at the hall to accept the donation, thank you to all scouts who made a donation. We hope to do more of these collections in the future. Thereafter Nightjar continued with the national challenge program with emphasis on Reach, Throw, Row, Go and the recovery position (the scouts were not catching a few 😴 although a few of them did look like they could've 🤣). The Swifts gave their current affair of the week report, telling the troop of a recent discovery in Italy. While building a road a complex was discovered underground which is estimated to be over 2500 years old. Well done everyone and good luck 💪✍️for these all important June exams, see you next week!⚜️

On Monday 25 May the scouts started with the National Challenge program on a plate. This year the National Challenge is centered around water awareness and water safety and is aptly named "BE WATER SAFE". Very important knowledge to have when you live near water 🌊 and do activities 🏄‍♂️🏊‍♀️🤽🚣🛶⛵️on the water! The patrols came up with chants and raps to memorize 🆘 numbers, tied 5 ropes together to see who could throw the rope the furthest to assist a person in trouble in the water 🛟 (it was Skunk and Sable for the win here) and completed the Be Water Safe quiz. 📝 The Swifts were top of the class with an impressive 💯%. Well done everyone for your efforts tonight! The Albatross patrol was also on call for the current affairs talk, Aeryn led the talk with news about a new species of dinosaur 🦕 found not too long ago. The Spinosaurus mirabilis was found in February in the Central Sahara desert in Niger.⚜️

On Saturday 23 May, Scouts, Cubs, scouters and parents gathered at Wildside Beach near Buffalo Bay for beach clean up time 🏖️. After two hours, we had 9 full rubbish bags and one truck tyre. We felt we had hardly made a dent in the amount of rubbish that was washed up with the recent storms but at least we have made a start. More beach clean ups to come in the coming weeks 🤔💪. Thank you to all who came out and assisted. Amazing what just two hours can do. 🤩⚜️

Monday 19/5 - Due to the storms of the last couple of weeks in the Garden Route many trees have been uprooted and gardens destroyed. A temporary dumping site for garden refuse was pointed out and many residents dropped off their tree branches, cuttings and other garden refuse for disposal and ultimately chipping. Abandoning the meeting last night to answer the call of our Ward 9 Councilor, Sharon Sabbagh, our troop and scouters went on a Chameleon hunt 🦎. Staying true to 🫡 scout law #6 - A scout is a friend to animals. Armed with torches, headlamps and boxes we headed across the road to help search through the branches and leaves for any stray chameleons before the chipper arrives! Our TS 🐧 accompanied by buddy Emma, managed to find one 🦎 with a member of the community finding a second pregnant one on the night. Thank you to the community members who also assisted with the search. Well done Scouts for getting involved in your community. ⚜️ The meeting ended with a short talk from Nightjar about the Hantavirus 🐭keeping scouts informed of current affairs. Next week the duty patrol will present a short talk on a current local or global news piece, we look forward to hearing from our scouts. 📰

As many of you are aware, Knysna and the surrounding areas were subjected to a horrific storm this past week. 🌧️💨The education department even made the decision to close schools in the area for two days due to the severe weather conditions. The wind and rain have caused much destruction, many, many trees have been uprooted, roads have been damaged, electricity supply has been interrupted as well as water services. The disaster management team 🧑‍🚒have been working hard to restore services but there is still a long road ahead until to get damaged infrastructure repaired.
Communities around Knysna were also affected with the appealing for donations to help destitute families.
1st Knysna answered the call and did their bit this morning to assist.
At 9am this morning, Scouts, Cubs, Scouters and parents gathered on the deck at Bosun's On George Rex. Our aim, to pack 100 Jars of Hope following the instructions on https://scoutwiki.scouts.org.za/wiki/Jars_of_Hope
While we did not use jars, the production line got into full swing and within an hour we had managed to pack 122 Bags of Hope. Each bag filled with rice, soup mix etc and will provide a meal for a family of four.
While the scouts and adults did this, our cubs, whose meeting did not happen on Wednesday, completed their super secret project 🤫😉 Happy Mother's Day to all our cub and scout Moms 💐.
Once the bag count was in, area cleaned up, thank you Bosuns for allowing us the use of your deck, Nightjar, Panda, Skunk and 4 of our scouts met up with Ms Lizel Baatjies who is co-ordinating relief aid for the Municipality. We managed to do the hand over just before she joined a JOC meeting.
Many thanks 🙏 to all who have donated towards this project and our heartful thanks to to all volunteers, fire fighters, Municipal officials, workers and any one else who have helped the wider community with rescue efforts, clean ups and tree felling, you guys are awesome 👏🦸‍♂️⚜️💜

Monday 4/5/2026: While it was a dark and stormy night, it did not deter our scouts from playing games outside and getting on in the dark with those all important mapping skills. Our SGL, Panda 🐼 formally invested Sable into the group as an ATS alongside Nightjar and Skunk under the watchful eye of our TS Penguin. Welcome once again Sable to 1st Knysna, we are so glad to have you with us. Then onto some bragging 😁 on the weekend our patrol of 8, made up of members from all three patrols, Aliya, Dante, Dominique, Mark, Trinity, Simon, Ayla and Jasmine took part in the annual Compo Camp organized this year by the Outeniqua Rover Crew. And, drum roll please, no last place this year for our scouts!!! Our Patrol took second place 🥈 and we couldn't be prouder !! Well done everyone, hold your heads high, you guys rock. 🤛💪🥳⚜️. We will post a photo of the patrol next week. Thank you to the Rovers for organizing and High Ridge Flora farm in George for hosting the event. # Scouts South Africa Outeniqua District # Plettenberg Bay Sea Scouts Group # 1st Sedgefield Scout Group South Africa # Western Cape Scouts
