CITY OF MATLOSANA WARNS RESIDENTS OF PAYMENT SCAM

The City of Matlosana local municipality has been alerted by several residents about a scam involving individuals who are calling residents and posing as municipal officials. The scammers, who identify themselves as “Eddie”, call residents and demand immediate payment for a municipal bill. The caller normally threatens to cut the electricity supply and remove the resident’s meter if payment is not made during the call.

The municipality does not request payments or make threats via telephone calls. All official notices for electricity accounts are issued in writing through account statements or formal letters delivered to the registered residential address.

Residents must not pay anyone who calls them claiming to be from the municipality. They must contact the City’s Customer Care or Revenue Department directly on 018 487 8000 to check their account status, or report the scammers immediately to SAPS on 10111.

Criminals are targeting households, especially during winter, when residents are most vulnerable to disconnection threats. Residents are requested to share this warning widely to protect vulnerable members of the community from losing money to fraudsters.
