A MESSAGE FROM VELOKHAYA

It’s come to our attention that we might be… a bit much.

Too much energy.
Too much drive.
Too many young riders showing up like they belong.

Apparently, taking on spaces like this
and riding them with confidence
is a lot to take in.

We take full responsibility.

For the work.
For the discipline.
For building riders who arrive ready.

We apologise
for raising the standard.

But not really.

— Velokhaya

Monday. We go again.

While some were still catching their breath from the weekend,
our BMX squad was already on the start line.

SA BMX Nationals.
Rounds 1, 2 and 3.
Zone7.

Six riders. All in.

Uyanda.
Three bronze medals.

Lelam.
Two bronze medals.

And the rest of the squad?
Finals. Top 5. Showing up. Holding their own.

No noise. No shortcuts.
Just work.

Different discipline. Same mindset.

Because whether it’s road, trail, or track…
this is what we build.

Consistency. Courage. And the belief to line up again.

Monday isn’t a reset.
It’s a continuation.

From the trails to the airwaves.

Not long ago, it was eight days of dust, climbs, and grit at the Cape Epic.

Now it’s microphones, headphones, and sharing the story.

Kuhle and Othando stepped into the studio this week, alongside our GM Sipho, to share more than just a race.

They spoke about the journey. Where it starts.
What it takes to keep going. And what Velokhaya is really building.

Because this was never just about finishing that race.

It’s about what happens after.
The doors that open. The voices that carry further than the ride ever could.

From Velokhaya to the Epic…
and then onto national radio.

The work speaks.

They tamed the Untamed.

Eight days of the Absa Cape Epic.
Not a gentle introduction. The real thing.

For Kuhle and Othando, this was their first time taking on a race like this on mountain bikes.

And still…they stayed with it.

Day after day.
When the legs are heavy.
When the climbs don’t end.
When it would be easier to let go.

They didn’t.

This is what grit looks like.
Not loud. Not rushed.
Just consistent. Just honest.

This is who the academy builds.

From where they started
to where they stand now,
we couldn’t be more proud!

Eight days. Dust. Climbing. Grit.

The Absa Cape Epic is is much more than just another mountain bike race.
It’s one of the toughest tests in cycling.

And for Kuhle and Othando, this is their first time taking on a mtb race, nevermind that it’s at this level!

Stage after stage.
Heat. Pressure. Unknown terrain.
And still, they keep showing up.

No shortcuts. No comfort zone.
Just heart, resilience, and the willingness to go again.

From the academy roads to the Epic trails,
they’ve carried this whole community with them.

Now, one last push.

Let’s show them what Velokhaya is about.
Drop them a message. Send some love.
Let them feel it going into the final stage.

We ride together. Always.

Litha Park. 💙

At the Blue Ribbon Sinovuyo Old Age Home 5km. Not a race. Something that matters much more.

Walking alongside our elders.
Listening. Laughing. Learning.

The ones who laid the road before we ever rode it.

Today was about slowing down,
being present, and showing love where it’s due.

Because this community, this movement
it starts with them.

Not every ride is about the spotlight.

Some days look like this.
A bit of sun, a bit of stillness, and riders dialling in the details.

The position.
The feel of the bike.
The quiet work that doesn’t get posted.

Because that’s where it’s built.

Two Velokhaya riders.
The Untamed African Mountain Bike Race.

Today they rolled into the prologue of the Cape Epic - eight days of racing that test every rider who dares to start.

Mountain biking isn’t their usual rhythm.
Most of their kilometres have been ridden on tar, not trails.

But when the clock started this morning, they did what cyclists do.

They rode.

Across the line in under an hour, sitting 2nd in the Exxaro category after the opening stage.

Not bad for riders whose story has largely been written on the road.

Moments like this only happen because people believe in the journey.

Thanks to Avis Southern Africa whose support helped put these riders on the start line this week.

Road or trail.
Known or unknown.

The engine just keeps turning. 🚲

Some rides are powered by legs.

Others by the people who quietly make the ride possible.

This week we’re taking a moment to appreciate the partners who helped Velokhaya riders line up at the start of the Cape Town Cycle Tour (and beyond).

To CIOVITA for kit built for the long road.
To Oakley South Africa for helping riders see every line of the road clearly.
To serving up passion all day, every day and keeping the coffee flowing for cyclists this weekend.
To Southern Sun where great journeys begin with a warm welcome.
To Cape Town Cycle Tour for opening the road to so many young cyclists year after year.
To Avis Southern Africa for helping move the team where they need to go.
To JAECOO South Africa for the wheels behind the wheels.
And to Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages bringing the refreshment during & after all the work is done and at every celebration

Some partners have stood with Velokhaya for many years. Others have only recently joined the journey.

Every one of them helps keep the pedals turning.

Grateful for the road we share 🙏🏽

What a day on the road!

The climbs, the long sweep past the ocean.
Thousands of riders.
And along the way, cheers from people who understand that a bicycle can change a life.

For our riders, the Cape Town Cycle Tour is never just a race.
It’s an experience.
A lesson in courage.
And a reminder that the world opens up when you start pedalling.

Thanks very much to the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust and Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages for supporting our riders this year & over many years, helping make moments like these possible.

The legs will recover.
But the memories of this ride will last much longer.
