Equal Education A movement striving for quality & equality in South African education through analysis and activism. EE was created to challenge this unjust status quo.

For Education Legal Support: facebook.com/EqualEducationLawCentre The Story of Equal Education

Equal Education (EE) was established on the 1st of February 2008 in Khayelitsha (a working-class community in Cape Town, with a population of approximately 700,000 people, and 54 schools). Schools in Khayelitsha, like those in other poor communities, were and are under-resourced, under-staffed and overcrowded - factors which have a significantly negative impact on academic performance. We are a movement of learners, parents, teachers, and community members striving for quality and equality in South African education. Weekly EE members meet and participate in a facilitated youth group (for high school learners in Grade 8 - 12) or in branch meetings (for our other members). It is here that our members formulate strategies that use advocacy and activism to improve schools and communities across the country. Today EE is known nationally, and has members active in most provinces. Since our inception we have put education on the national agenda, have empowered young people and become the grassroots voice of education related matters in the country. We have won tangible victories in schools, securing binding national school infrastructure regulations, hundreds of millions in government funding for sanitation, a scholar transport policy and scholar transport access for 8000 learners. We have defended the rights of pregnant students and Rastafarian students who faced exclusionary policies, and been instrumental to the reform of feeder zone policies which entrench segregation. We have prevented schools being unlawfully closed, and worked towards schools remaining democratic and inclusive spaces when innovative new school policies are introduced. Finally, we have campaigned and secured improvements to countless specific schools across South Africa. Today EE is a thriving national movement, operating in five provinces, with nearly 7000 members working daily to improve education in South Africa. Qina Equal Education Qina!

[Post School Youth] ✊🏾Yesterday Eastern Cape had their community engagement with the EC Post School Youth from Sweetwaters and today they were at Ndevana as a build up to the Waithood Youth Action taking place on the 29th of this month.

Comrades were on the ground discussing the plight and systemic drivers of youth unemployment in South Africa, particularly in the Eastern Cape.

We are organising to break that wait! 💛🖤

[Yoliswa Dwane anual memorial lecture ] 🧑🏾‍🏫 Equal Education and the (CLS) are pleased to invite you to the fourth annual Yoliswa Dwane memorial lecture at the University of Cape Town on Wednesday, 21st October, on the topic “Accountability Beyond Courts: Strategies from the ground”.

The public lecture will be delivered by Nomzamo Zondo, Executive Director of the Socio-Economic Rights Institute. Nomzamo will reflect on community-led strategies for justice and accountability when the law alone is not enough.

The lecture is held in memory of EE’s co-founder, Yoliswa Dwane. Yoliswa sadly passed away on 21 October 2022. She was born in the Eastern Cape, in Dimbaza, and went to school there, later moving to Khayelitsha in the Western Cape. She graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2007 with a degree in film and media studies and a postgraduate LLB. She dedicated her life to advancing social justice as a community activist.

“Equal Education develops understanding of the educational system, whilst drawing attention to problems faced by schools and communities. By equipping ordinary citizens with this knowledge, EE offers us a new way to participate in the democratic process and effect change in the education system and society at large”
-Yoliswa Dwane,2012

NB: We want to encourage even the comrades that won’t be physically in the Western Cape to join us virtually.

[Solidarity Statement] ✊🏾 Equal Education stands with Rhodes students facing financial exclusion.

No student should be turned away, denied meals, or have certificates withheld because they cannot afford fees or historical debt.

We condemn violence against students and call on Rhodes management to engage meaningfully and find fair, sustainable solutions.

Education is a right not a privilege for those who can pay.

[Local Government Election teach ins] ✊🏾Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, you showed up!

We just wrapped Day one of our Local Government Election Teach-Ins in CPT and KZN.

From understanding what local government actually does, to why our vote and our voice beyond the ballot matters our cadres came ready to learn, debate, and organise.

Municipalities control the water we drink, the parks we play in, and the services our communities survive on. Today we broke it down who is in charge, how decisions are made, and why youth power is key for LGE 2026.

Next up is day two: Who holds the power🔥

ONE CADRE. ONE COMMUNITY. BUILDING POWER WHERE WE LIVE.

[Capacity Norms] 🚨Today was the deadline for the Department of Basic Education South Africa to release final capacity norms. It has not been released.

Community Leader Angel Mdluli,Gauteng:
“When we talk about capacity norms we don’t talk about something on paper we talk about real learners and real conditions. Overcrowding must end.”

We demand the norms NOW!

[Local Government Election teach ins]💛🖤 Yesterday we wrapped up our Teach-Ins in Gauteng, Limpopo and Eastern Cape!

Our cadres took on Understanding Power, Politics and Accountability in Local Government and named the truth, Municipal dysfunction is NOT just technical. It is a POLITICAL choice.

Who gets to deliver our water, parks and infrastructure? Who do ward councillors really represent vs PR councillors? And who decides which communities get left behind?

We debated who is responsible, compared councillors, and built vision boards of the just municipalities we deserve.

The message is clear! Our power does NOT end at the ballot. We must organise, question political choices, and demand accountability where we live.

Tomorrow we kick start Day one in Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal! ✊🏾

ONE CADRE. ONE COMMUNITY. BUILDING POWER WHERE WE LIVE.

[Capacity Norms] 💛🖤 Our Equalisers break down the daily struggles they face in overcrowded classrooms, the lack of infrastructure in their schools, and they are sending a message to the Minister of education Siviwe Gwarube MP as we count down to 1 October, when the new Capacity Norms will be released.

They also reflect on what learning could look like if the Capacity Norms were changed for the better.

Overcrowding is not normal. Every learner deserves a safe, spacious classroom that enables dignified learning.
