Traditional Policing Concept (SAPS initiative)
Goal:
To bring basic policing services closer to communities, particularly in rural areas, and to formalize partnerships with traditional leaders to fight crime together.
Rationale:
Draws strength from tradition, recognizing the need for community involvement to combat crime and restore a sense of community, and aims to build a collective front against criminality.
Key features:
Partnerships:
Involves collaboration with traditional councils and leaders to improve service delivery.
Accessibility:
Aims to create traditional contact points to make it easier for isolated communities to report crimes.
Integrated approach:
Integrates with other strategies, such as the community policing and rural safety strategies.
Implementation:
The concept was first launched in Mpumalanga in 2003, nationalized with a launch in the Eastern Cape in 2017, and has continued to be rolled out in other provinces in 2023.
