One of the most heartwarming and truly South African volunteering stories comes from the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day (18 July), where ordinary people dedicate 67 minutes (symbolizing Mandela's 67 years of public service) to community service. A beautiful real-life example happened in 2023–2024 across townships and rural areas:

A group of young volunteers from Soweto and Alexandra (many in their late teens/early 20s) organised themselves via WhatsApp to spend Mandela Day at under-resourced early childhood development (ECD) centres. One centre in Diepsloot had leaking roofs, no proper playground, and teachers using their own money for snacks. The volunteers didn't just show up for 67 minutes—they turned it into a full day of action.
They arrived with donated paint, brushes, and old tyres. In the morning, they painted colourful murals on the walls (with kids helping by making handprints), fixed broken furniture, and cleared litter from the yard. By afternoon, they transformed a patch of dirt into a simple playground using tyres as swings and painted stepping stones. The kids were over the moon—running around shouting "Yebo!" and hugging the volunteers. One little girl (about 5 years old) told a volunteer, "You made our school beautiful like a rainbow, like Madiba said."

What made it quintessentially South African was the ubuntu on display: local aunties from the community brought pap and stew to feed everyone, a nearby spaza shop owner donated cold drinks without being asked, and the volunteers sang struggle songs while working. No big NGO funding—just people helping people, with laughter, music, and shared meals.
The story spread on social media ( ), inspiring more groups to do similar clean-ups and upgrades. One volunteer later said: "We came to give 67 minutes, but left with full hearts and new family." It's a small but powerful reminder that in South Africa, volunteering often starts with "sawubona" (I see you) and ends with lasting change through community spirit.
Stories like this happen every year—real, grassroots, and full of hope. If you'd like more (e.g., wildlife rehab tales or rural education wins), just say! 🇿🇦💛
