๐ŸŒฟ Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Prof Richard Fynn

Professor Richard Fynn is a leading rangeland ecologist and conservation scientist based at the University of Botswana Okavango Research Institute in Maun. His work sits at the intersection of ecology, livestock production, and sustainable land management in African savannas.

His research has advanced our understanding of fireโ€“plantโ€“herbivore interactions and the importance of functional habitat heterogeneity in supporting productive, resilient ecosystems. A key focus of his work is identifying optimal grazing strategies that maintain healthy rangelandsโ€”particularly through nonselective grazing and adequate recovery periods.

More recently, Prof. Fynn has explored how improved grazing management can enhance biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration, with emerging evidence showing that well-managed rangelands can play a meaningful role in storing atmospheric COโ‚‚.

His work also highlights the value of indigenous African cattle breeds, which are naturally adapted to local conditions, require minimal intervention, and support ecosystem processes such as dung beetle activity. These breeds are central to his vision of high-density, nature-aligned grazing systems.

Beyond ecology, his research engages directly with pastoral and agro-pastoral communities, demonstrating how sustainable livestock systems can support both livelihoods and wildlife coexistence. He is also a strong advocate for transitioning from feedlot systems to range-fed beef production that is healthier and more environmentally sustainable.

Join us to hear how science, practice, and community stewardship can come together to shape the future of Africaโ€™s rangelands.

๐ŸŒฟ Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Diana Marewangepo

We are honoured to welcome Diana Marewangepo as a keynote speaker at the SAWMA Conference.

Diana is a distinguished conservation leader whose work sits at the intersection of science, policy, and on-the-ground wildlife management. She currently serves as Senior Terrestrial Ecologist for the Harare Region with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, where she plays a key role in safeguarding Zimbabweโ€™s biodiversity.

From 2020 to 2024, Diana served as Zimbabweโ€™s National Rhino Coordinator, leading critical efforts to conserve one of Africaโ€™s most iconic and threatened species. She also contributes at a continental level as a member of the IUCN African Rhino Specialist Group, helping shape the future of rhino conservation across Africa.

With a Masterโ€™s degree in Ecological Resources Management and specialised training in GIS, wildlife monitoring technologies, and paramilitary conservation approaches, Diana brings a rare combination of technical expertise and leadership to her work.

Her participation in the 2025 Wildlife Conservation Network Career Program reflects her continued commitment to advancing innovative and impactful conservation strategies.

Diana represents a new generation of African conservation professionals โ€” grounded in science, driven by purpose, and committed to securing a future for wildlife and the ecosystems they depend on.

We look forward to the insights she will share at this yearโ€™s conference.

๐ŸŒฟ Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Sandi Willows-Munro

We are proud to welcome Professor Sandi Willows-Munro as a keynote speaker at the SAWMA Conference.

Prof. Willows-Munro is a leading conservation geneticist and Head of the Conservation Genetics Lab at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Her work spans evolutionary and molecular biology, with a strong focus on applying phylogenetic, phylogeographic, and population genetic approaches to understand biodiversity and inform conservation.

She completed her PhD at Stellenbosch University under the supervision of Conrad Matthee, and went on to contribute to the Amphibian Tree of Life Project during her postdoctoral research at the University of Texas at Austin alongside David Hillis and David Cannatella.

Her passion for African avifauna has seen her work on the genetics of iconic species, including Poicephalus parrots and vultures, contributing valuable insights into their evolution and conservation.

Prof. Willows-Munro also plays an important leadership role in the global scientific community, serving as Secretary of the International Ornithological Union and contributing to several leading journals, including IBIS, African Zoology, and Global Ecology and Conservation.

We look forward to the depth of knowledge and perspective she will bring to this yearโ€™s conference.
