Could Your Loved One Be Showing Signs of Dementia?

Changes in memory, behaviour or everyday abilities can be worrying. While occasional forgetfulness can be a normal part of ageing, persistent changes should be taken seriously.

Look out for:
• Repeating questions or stories
• Forgetting recent events
• Confusion about dates or familiar places
• Difficulty with everyday tasks
• Changes in mood or personality

These signs don't necessarily mean dementia. A professional assessment is the best first step.

Approach the conversation with patience, compassion and understanding.

WORLD OSTEOPOROSIS DAY

Strong bones help us stay active, mobile and independent and bone health becomes increasingly important as we grow older.

Osteoporosis can develop without obvious symptoms until a fracture occurs, which is why looking after our bone health and having regular conversations with healthcare professionals is so important.

Today is a reminder to:
• Stay active with exercise that is appropriate for you
• Make nutritious choices that support bone health
• Talk to your healthcare professional about your individual risk
• Take falls prevention seriously
• Encourage loved ones to prioritise their bone health

Looking after your bones today can help support your independence tomorrow.

Let's keep moving, keep learning and keep taking care of the foundations that help us live well.

World Restart a Heart Day | Be the Difference Between Life and Loss

Would you know what to do if someone suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing?

World Restart a Heart Day reminds us that knowing basic CPR and how to respond in an emergency can help save a life.

For older adults, who may be at increased risk of cardiac emergencies, having family members, caregivers and community members who know what to do can provide an important layer of safety.

If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally:
• Call for emergency medical help immediately.
• Start CPR if you are able to do so.
• Use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) if one is available and you are trained or guided to use it.
• Continue CPR until professional help arrives or the person shows signs of life.

Learning CPR isn't only a skill for healthcare professionals, ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.

This World Restart a Heart Day, consider learning CPR. You could one day be the person who helps restart a heart.

WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY

Arthritis can affect the way we move, work and enjoy everyday activities but living with arthritis doesn't mean giving up on staying active and enjoying life.

This World Arthritis Day, let's raise awareness and encourage healthy habits that can support mobility and wellbeing.

• Keep moving in ways that are comfortable and appropriate for you
• Maintain a healthy lifestyle
• Listen to your body and don't ignore persistent pain
• Speak to a healthcare professional about symptoms and treatment options
• Stay connected and involved in activities you enjoy

For older adults, maintaining mobility can play an important role in independence and quality of life.

Small steps, gentle movement and the right support can help us keep moving forward.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY

Mental health matters at every age.

For elders, having meaningful connections, staying socially active and having a sense of purpose can make a meaningful difference to overall wellbeing. Sometimes, something as simple as a friendly conversation, a shared cup of tea or taking part in an activity can brighten someone's day.

Today is a reminder to:

• Check in on someone you care about
• Make time for connection and conversation
• Stay active and involved in things you enjoy
• Talk about how you're feeling
• Remember that asking for support is okay

A simple “How are you?” can mean more than we realise.

Let's create communities where people feel seen, heard, valued and connected today and every day.

WORLD SIGHT DAY

Our eyesight helps us experience so much of everyday life from recognising a familiar face and reading a favourite book to enjoying the beauty of a garden or watching the sunset.

As we grow older, looking after our eye health becomes an important part of maintaining independence and quality of life.

This World Sight Day, take a moment to prioritise your vision.

• Schedule regular eye examinations
• Don't ignore changes in your vision
• Speak to a healthcare professional about any concerns
• Encourage an older loved one to have their eyes checked

Good vision can help us stay connected, active and confident in everyday life.

Your eyes deserve care too.

TODAY, WE CELEBRATE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SHAPED OUR LIVES

Behind every older person is a lifetime of stories, lessons, laughter, challenges overcome and memories created.

Today, on International Day of Older Persons, we celebrate the generations who have helped shape our families, our communities and the world around us.

Growing older is something to be embraced with dignity, respect, friendship, purpose and plenty of opportunities to enjoy life.

It’s also a reminder that older people have so much to give. Their stories connect generations, their wisdom can guide us, and their presence brings meaning to the lives of those around them.

Take a moment today to celebrate an older person who has made a difference in your life.

Maybe it’s a parent, grandparent, mentor, neighbour, friend or someone who simply made your world a little brighter.

Tell us in the comments: What is one thing you have learned from an older person in your life?

Let’s celebrate their stories, their wisdom and the incredible lives they have lived.

WORLD HEART DAY

Small Steps. A Healthier Heart.

Our heart works for us every day, so let's make heart health a priority at every age.

Simple lifestyle choices can make a meaningful difference:
• Stay active – Enjoy regular movement that suits your abilities.
• Eat well – Choose a balanced diet with plenty of nutritious foods.
• Manage stress – Make time to relax, connect and enjoy activities that bring you joy.
• Attend regular health checks – Keep an eye on important health measures and speak to your healthcare professional about any concerns.

At Flower Foundation, we believe healthy ageing includes looking after your heart, staying connected and making choices that support your overall wellbeing.

Take care of your heart, because every heartbeat matters.
