AI may be changing science faster than our rules for credit, ownership and research ethics can keep up. The Navier Stokes/OpenAI controversy raises a bigger question than whether AI can solve hard mathematics: what happens when the tool a researcher uses to think can also become their competitor?

Satya Nadella calls this the “Reverse Information Paradox”. In the AI era, the most valuable IP may not be the finished paper. It may be the prompts, corrections, failed paths and insight that narrow the search.

My latest article asks where we now draw the line between collaboration, computation, attribution and appropriation. A machine can formalise a proof in Lean. It cannot formalise integrity.

Africa needs to pay very close attention to what is happening in India.

The FT has a fascinating piece on AI disrupting India’s massive IT industry.

We’re talking about an industry employing around 6 million people, generating $300bn+ annually and contributing roughly 7% of India’s GDP.

For decades the equation was simple: more outsourced technology work = more engineers employed.

AI just broke that equation.

Companies can increasingly do more work with fewer people.

But here’s the part I think Africa should tattoo onto its technology policy documents 😂:

India has an enormous pool of tech talent, yet remains relatively weak in frontier AI innovation.

There’s our warning.

Teaching Africans to code is no longer enough. We need Africans building the models, owning the IP, controlling the data, building compute infrastructure, manufacturing technology and creating globally competitive deep-tech companies.

The biggest AI risk for Africa isn’t simply losing jobs.

It’s watching yet another technological revolution happen while we proudly announce that we are “participating”, only to discover that everybody else owns the technology. 😭

We need to move from:

learn to code → learn to build → learn to invent → OWN.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity and ownership are not.
