Africa needs to pay very close attention to what is happening in India.

The FT has a fascinating piece on AI disrupting India’s massive IT industry.

We’re talking about an industry employing around 6 million people, generating $300bn+ annually and contributing roughly 7% of India’s GDP.

For decades the equation was simple: more outsourced technology work = more engineers employed.

AI just broke that equation.

Companies can increasingly do more work with fewer people.

But here’s the part I think Africa should tattoo onto its technology policy documents 😂:

India has an enormous pool of tech talent, yet remains relatively weak in frontier AI innovation.

There’s our warning.

Teaching Africans to code is no longer enough. We need Africans building the models, owning the IP, controlling the data, building compute infrastructure, manufacturing technology and creating globally competitive deep-tech companies.

The biggest AI risk for Africa isn’t simply losing jobs.

It’s watching yet another technological revolution happen while we proudly announce that we are “participating”, only to discover that everybody else owns the technology. 😭

We need to move from:

learn to code → learn to build → learn to invent → OWN.

Talent is everywhere. Opportunity and ownership are not.

Today, we mark a defining moment for SWERFVALK.

I am proud to announce the appointment of Nqobile Hadebe as Chief Executive Officer and equity shareholder.

This is more than a leadership transition, it is a declaration of intent.

SWERFVALK was founded to advance hydrogen powered UAV systems and AI orchestrated drone ecosystems for defence and critical infrastructure, with sustainability embedded at the core. Real disruption is not only technological, it is structural, cultural and grounded in ownership.

Nqobile brings over two decades of executive leadership across technology, impact investment and corporate strategy. She is an IT undergraduate, a Chartered PR Practitioner, and holds a postgraduate qualification in Business Administration from the University of Cape Town. Her career spans senior leadership at Microsoft South Africa, SAB Miller and Dimension Data, alongside board roles that reflect deep governance strength and strategic oversight.

She joins not as a hired executive, but as a shareholder, invested in the mission and accountable for its future.

You built with doors half-open and rules that change when you arrive. You pitched in rooms where confidence is called “aggression” the moment it has a woman’s voice. You stretched a budget, a schedule, a heart; while still showing up polished, present, prepared. And somehow, you kept going.

But here’s the quiet theft: we fight so hard to make it that when we finally win, we’re too tired to feel it. We swallow the milestone like medicine and rush to the next fire.

Today, take your win back.

Pause. Breathe. Stand in the evidence. Clap for the girl who didn’t quit. Clap for the woman who outlasted bias, bureaucracy, and silence. Clap like your future is watching; because it is.
