As we continue MHD conversations beyond commemorations. The deputy minister of education, in partnership with AHF, Baithudi Mampane Foundation and other partners, will convene business partners and the private sector to mobilize their participation and investment into menstrual resources and accessibility to address period poverty.

The purpose of this dinner is to advocate for sustainable and accessibility. AHF is excited to be part of such an important conversation to reduce young girls vulnerability to HIV and STI'S due to period poverty.

When countries spend more on debt than on doctors, schools, or food, people pay the price.
Right now:

- Billions of people are affected
- Interest rates are stacked against developing nations
- Trillions of dollars flow out of poorer countries every year

The system is broken, but it can be fixed.
AHF’s Freedom from Debt campaign is pushing for:

✔ A global forum so countries can make fair deals
✔ Debt pauses when health or climate crises hit
✔ A small tax on AI companies to help pay for healthcare, education, and other basic needs
Because everyone deserves a fair chance at a better future.

Our KZN Prevention Team, through the Wellness Centre Programme, recently hosted a one-day STI training session for peer educators from Mangosuthu University of Technology, Campus Care Workers from Higher Health, traditional health practitioners, members of Community Power Voices, the eThekwini District AIDS Council, as well as representatives from the Men's and Youth sectors.

The training aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively identify, prevent, and respond to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Key focus areas included syndromic screening, diagnosis, and treatment of STIs, including syphilis.

STI rates continue to rise, despite many infections being preventable through safer sexual practices, regular testing, and early treatment.

This Youth Day, we are reminded that the global debt crisis is not just an economic issue, it's a youth issue and a human rights issue.

When unfair debt repayments are prioritised over people, critical investments in education, healthcare, job creation, and climate resilience are sacrificed. It is young people who often bear the greatest burden, facing overcrowded classrooms, limited opportunities, and reduced access to essential services needed to build a better future.

Today, 3.4 billion people live in countries where resources that could support their wellbeing and development are diverted to servicing debt.

Much of this system is tied to financial institutions and lending structures rooted in wealthier economies, making meaningful reform a shared global responsibility. The U.S. and Europe have an important role to play in driving change.

The Freedom from Debt campaign is calling for practical solutions:
✔ A Borrowers' Forum to strengthen developing countries' negotiating power
✔ Debt relief during public health and climate crises to protect lives
✔ A 1% AI solidarity levy to invest in resilience and future generations

This Youth Day, let's champion a world where young people inherit opportunity, not debt. Stronger systems today mean a more stable, equitable future for tomorrow's leaders.

As we gear up to commemorate Youth Day, it is important to engage in conversations around the issues affecting young people today.

During an interview on Heidelberg Radio, our Girls Act member, Ratile Maisela, highlighted key challenges facing adolescent girls and young women, including high HIV infection rates and the importance of consistent condom use.

She emphasised the need to empower young girls with accurate information on sexual and reproductive health services and how to access them. Equipping young people with knowledge and resources is essential in helping them protect themselves against HIV, STIs, and unplanned pregnancies while enabling them to make informed decisions about their health and future.

You can’t control what your partner does out there but you can surely protect yourself if you use a condom. Just use it!...

The global debt crisis is a human rights issue.

When unfair debt payments are prioritized over people, life-saving programs for climate resilience, access to education, and universal healthcare suffer, leaving 3.4 billion people without the resources needed to live with dignity.

Much of this system is tied to financial institutions and lending structures rooted in wealthier economies—making reform a shared responsibility. The U.S. and Europe can play a major role.

The Freedom from Debt campaign is calling for practical solutions:

✔A Borrowers’ Forum to strengthen developing countries’ negotiating power
✔Debt relief during public health and climate crises to protect lives
✔A 1% AI solidarity levy to invest in resilience

Stronger systems abroad mean a more stable future for all.

A stable global economy depends on sustainable debt for developing countries.

Many developing countries pay two to ten times higher interest rates than wealthier nations while also losing billions of dollars that flow out each year through debt servicing and financial leakage, often back into wealthy countries.

This weakens health systems, slows development, and increases global risk.
Leaders in the U.S. and Europe can help lead meaningful reform.

Our Freedom from Debt campaign calls for:
✔ Implement a Borrowers’ Forum to strengthen the Global South’s negotiating power
✔ Ensure debt pauses during public health emergencies or climate disasters
✔ Back a global AI solidarity levy on AI firms’ capital investments and revenues

Unsustainable debt is a human rights issue. A fairer, more balanced system benefits everyone.

The global debt crisis is holding back progress and wealthy countries have a key role in fixing it.

Today...
- 3.4 billion people live in countries that spend more on debt than on health or education.
- Developing nations pay two to ten times higher interest rates than wealthy nations.
- Poorer countries send about $3 trillion a year to richer ones through debt payments, high interest, and resource tax loopholes.

Under the Freedom from Debt campaign, there is a clear path forward:

✔A Borrowers’ Forum to strengthen negotiating power for the Global South
✔ Automatic debt pauses during public health and climate crises
✔ A 1% AI solidarity levy to fund debt relief and essential services
The chance for sustainable growth worldwide depends on a fairer system.
